Bath repair across LA14: what to expect

Whether your bath is steel, cast iron or acrylic, we can repair it. The method changes with the material: metal baths need any rust dealt with first, and acrylic cracks need support from behind. We regularly repair pressed steel enamel, whirlpool & spa baths and acrylic, and people most frequently call us about chips along the edge of the bath and rusty patches near the plughole.

On the day itself, there’s little for you to do. Let us in and show us the room, and we will take it from there. Most visits take a few hours, depending on the damage, including clearing up.

  1. We start by looking at the damage and confirming the plan with you.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. We tint the finish by hand to match the bath.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

How to look after the repair

Once the work has cured, treat it gently:

  • Protect the bath with a towel when doing jobs nearby
  • Avoid scourers, wire wool and gritty cream cleaners
  • Check that an acrylic bath doesn’t move when you stand in it
  • Rinse the bath after use, especially in hard water areas

Leave the repair to cure for as long as we say before using the bath. From then on, mild cleaning is all it needs.

Rust spreads under enamel faster than most people expect. A chip the size of a fingernail can become a much larger patch if it’s left for months, so it pays to deal with it early.

Repairing versus replacing

A repair makes sense whenever the damage is localised. It’s a fraction of the cost of a new bath and fitting, it takes one visit, and nothing else in the room changes.

What we’re called out for in LA14

Nearly all the chips we see start with something being dropped: a shampoo bottle, a shower head, a tile or a tool during a refit. On steel and cast iron baths, any chip down to the metal will start to rust.

Send us a picture if you notice any of these:

  • A failed DIY repair that is discoloured or lifting
  • Hairline or through cracks in acrylic
  • Impact holes in acrylic
  • Rusty patches near the plughole

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are thick and very strong, finished with fired enamel. Chips can rust if left, but the body of the bath lasts a very long time, which makes it well worth repairing.

Pressed steel

Steel baths are lighter than cast iron, but have a similar enamel surface. Chips rust quickly on steel, particularly by the plughole, so repair chips early.

What bath repair costs

Repairs from £95. There’s no area surcharge for LA14. What changes the price is:

  • What kind of damage it is
  • Access to the area
  • How many items we do on one visit
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out

Set against the cost of replacement, a repair is typically a fraction of the price, because there’s no removal, plumbing or making good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.

How to get a fixed quote

Two or three clear photos are typically enough. Try to include:

  • A coin beside the damage so we can judge size
  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection
  • The material, if you know it
  • A picture taken from further back

A quote takes minutes to ask for: take one close-up and one wider shot of the bath, add your postcode and send them to us. You’ll get a fixed price, not an estimate.
