About bath repair in SG19

A damaged bath does not have to mean a new bathroom. We fill the damage, shape it to the curve of the bath and refinish it, mixing the colour on the day so the repair is hard to spot. We regularly repair pressed steel enamel, whirlpool & spa baths and cast iron enamel, and the jobs we see most are holes from dropped items and chips caused by builders.

It’s a tidy, low-fuss visit. We confirm the time with you beforehand, cover and mask the work area, and get on with the job, which normally takes a few hours. If anything looks different from your pictures, we’ll talk to you before going ahead.

  1. We start by looking at the damage and confirming the plan with you.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. We build up the filler in layers, shaping it to the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. The repair is polished to the same gloss as the bath and left to cure.

Local landmarks in Sandy

Typical jobs here are in homes near Church of St Swithun, Kings Arms Public House and Sandy Secondary School. For rail, the closest station is Sandy station, about 0.8 miles south-east of the centre. A little further out are Biggleswade Hospital (3.1 miles south-east) and Gannocks Castle (2.1 miles north). The countryside around Sandy includes The Riddy.

Why repair rather than replace?

Replacing a bath rarely stops at the bath: tiles along the rim typically crack when it comes out, the panel may not fit the new one, and the plumbing has to be disconnected and refitted. A repair skips all of it.

Signs you need bath repair

A bath gets knocked about more than you’d think: bottles, shower heads and razors are dropped every day, and taps and wastes are tightened against the surface. Sooner or later, most baths pick up a chip.

People normally call us after spotting one of these:

  • A chipped rim or side
  • Rusty patches near the plughole
  • Scuffs and scratches in the surface
  • A chip where the taps sit

Keeping it looking good

Good habits make a big difference to how long a repair lasts:

  • If an acrylic bath flexes, have its feet adjusted
  • Don’t leave a fresh chip for long
  • Rinse the bath after use, especially in hard water areas
  • Use a soft cloth and washing-up liquid for everyday cleaning

Don’t leave razors, cans or hair grips in the bath, because they can mark the enamel. A dripping tap should be fixed early, too.

Until we visit, a strip of waterproof tape over the damage helps, to keep water out. Take it off before we arrive.

Different materials, different repairs

Acrylic

Acrylic baths are moulded sheet reinforced underneath. There is no rust, but cracks, holes and scratches happen, and a crack only stays repaired if it’s supported underneath.

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is normally cheaper.

If you do try a kit, read the instructions carefully, and give it the full curing time. If it does not work out, we can still repair it properly.
