About bath repair in TS17

We repair just the damaged spot and colour-match it to the bath, which costs far less than replacing a fitted bath and the tiles around it. You can typically use the bath the following day. We regularly repair cast iron enamel, acrylic and whirlpool & spa baths, and the jobs we see most are chips caused by builders and a hole punched through by something heavy.

We turn up at the time we agreed with you, introduces themselves and looks over the damage before anything else. Dust sheets and masking tape go down before we open a single tin. Most visits take a few hours, depending on the damage, and the room is left clean and tidy.

  1. First, the area is cleaned and any loose enamel or rust is removed.
  2. We fill the damage and sand it flush with the surrounding surface.
  3. We tint the finish on the day to suit your bath’s shade of white or colour.
  4. Finish coats go on, then the repair is polished to blend in.
  5. Once it has cured, typically by the following day, the bath is ready to use.

Repairs by material

Pressed steel

Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.

Composite and resin

Stone resin and composite baths are heavy and solid. Chips and scratches can be filled and colour matched, in much the same way.

Common problems we fix in TS17

Nearly all the chips we see start with something being dropped: a shampoo bottle, a shower head, a tile or a tool during a refit. On enamelled baths, a chip that reaches the metal lets water in, and rust follows.

Keep an eye out for these signs:

  • Rusty patches near the plughole
  • A kit repair that didn’t last
  • Damage beneath the taps
  • Cracks in an acrylic bath

What a repair cannot fix

It helps to know what we can’t do:

  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)
  • Cracks in parts of an acrylic bath we can’t get to from below
  • A bath worn all over, where resurfacing makes more sense

How to look after the repair

Most damage we see is avoidable. A few tips:

  • Clean with warm water and a mild detergent
  • Don’t scrub with anything abrasive
  • Fix dripping taps early to stop staining and limescale
  • Store metal items away from the bath

For the first few days, keep heavy bottles off the repaired spot. After that, clean it as you would the rest of the bath without abrasive products.

A chip on a metal bath shouldn’t be left. Once water reaches the metal, rust begins, and a rust spot is a bigger repair than a clean chip.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface is not prepared the repair won’t last.

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

Common questions in TS17

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Generally, yes. Replacement brings removal, refitting and making good, which a repair avoids. If it isn’t worth repairing, we’ll tell you.

Can you redo an old repair?

Yes. We take out the old repair and do it properly. Mention it when you send photos.

Do you come to TS17?

Yes. We work across the UK and come to TS17 and the rest of Stockton-on-Tees. Send pictures and we will quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Is there a call-out fee?

There is no separate call-out charge. The fixed price covers the visit and the work.

What happens after I send photos?

We look at the pictures and reply with a fixed price and some dates. If we need another angle, we will ask.

Can you repair several things at once?

Yes. Combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down. Include photos of each item.

How soon can you come?

Your quote comes with available dates. If it’s urgent, say so and we’ll do what we can.
