Your questions about tile repair in Cargo

Are you accredited?

We are accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.

Will the price change on the day?

We stop, show you and agree any change before carrying on. You will not be charged for anything you haven’t agreed.

How do I book?

Just pictures, your postcode and a contact number. On the day, we only need access to the room.

Do you cover the entire of Cumbria?

Everywhere in the UK, Cargo included. Travel is included in the price.

Can pets and children be at home?

Keep pets and children away from the work area on the day, mainly so nothing gets touched before it has cured.

Is repairing better than replacing?

Usually, when the rest is in good condition. A repair avoids removal and making good. If replacing would be better, we’ll say so.

It’s been repaired before. Can you still fix it?

Generally, yes. The old repair comes out first.

Is it messy?

Very little mess: we sheet and mask everything nearby, and we take our waste away with us.

How we handle tile repair in Cargo

If a tile moves, it may need relaying first, and we’ll say so. We repair the tile in place, so there is no need to hunt for a matching tile. We regularly repair natural stone & granite, ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles, and common reasons people get in touch are cracked floor tiles and drill holes from removed fittings.

All our work is covered by our one-year guarantee. Take care with heavy items on repaired tiles, and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner.

Speckled stone tiles with chips repaired to match the pattern

What we do, step by step

Your technician turns up when we said we would, introduces themselves and looks over the damage before anything else. The floor and nearby surfaces are covered before any work starts. Most visits take a few hours, and we leave the room as we found it.

  1. We clean the tile and remove loose fragments.
  2. The chip, crack or hole is filled.
  3. The repair is levelled to the tile surface.
  4. We recreate the colour and pattern by hand.
  5. Finally we seal it to match the tile.

How to prepare

  • Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive
  • Let us know which floor the room is on
  • Open a window if you can

How to get a price

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: photograph the damage, then the whole tiled area, add your postcode and send them over. You will get a fixed quote, not an estimate.

Should you replace it?

Swapping out a damaged tile involves breaking out the old tile, tracking down a matching tile and possibly cracking its neighbours. Repairing it leaves the tile where it is. Our tile repair starts from £95. Set against the cost of replacement, a repair is normally a fraction of the price, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.

Landlord and trade work in Cargo

Rental properties take more wear, and replacing things at every changeover adds up. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.

Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs in Cumbria and across the UK. Repairing in place avoids the disruption of a replacement, which is easier on the people living there.

Honest limits

Some jobs aren’t right for a repair, including:

  • Loose or hollow tiles that need relaying
  • Cracks caused by a moving floor, until the floor is fixed
  • Whole walls of failing grout

Send us pictures and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Surfaces we repair

  • Marble
  • Ceramic tiles
  • Porcelain tiles
  • Natural stone & granite
  • Floor and wall tiles

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £95. A fixed quote means you know the cost before booking. We look at:

  • Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off
  • Doing more than one item at once
  • The size and number of damaged areas
  • What kind of damage it is

Our prices are the same across the UK, so there’s no premium for Cargo. The job itself decides the price: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.

Quotes from your photos

Two or three clear pictures are generally enough. It helps if you send:

  • Any details about the material
  • A coin beside the damage so we can judge size
  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection
  • One sharp close-up of the damage

Most clients in Cargo get their price from photos. Tell us what happened and where you are, and we will send back a fixed quote and some dates.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. The trouble is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler often lifts.

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is normally the cheaper route.
