Repair or replace: which is better?

Replacing a worktop means taking out the damaged top, cutting and fitting a new one and refitting the sink and hob, and matching the rest of the kitchen can be hard. Repairing the damage leaves the worktop in place. Our worktop repair starts from £95. There are no surprise extras on the day. The price we quote from your photos is the price you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Laminate

Laminate worktops have a printed decorative layer over a board core. Chips and burns are filled and the pattern recreated.

Granite and stone

Granite and stone chip at edges and cut-outs. The repair is filled and polished to the stone’s finish.

What worktop repair costs

Prices start from £95. Prices are worked out job by job, from your pictures. The main factors are:

  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • The type of damage
  • How much damage there is

Our prices are the same across the UK, so there’s no premium for Airmyn. What changes the price is the job itself: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Quotes from your photos

Good photos mean an accurate price. Here’s what we find most useful:

  • Where you are, by postcode
  • Something in shot to show the size
  • Details of any past repairs
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus

You do not need a survey visit. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we’ll reply with a fixed price.

How it works

A typical visit goes like this: we arrive on time, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and tidy away. Plan for a few hours, depending on the damage. Before leaving, we tell you how long to leave it and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. We assess the damage and the worktop material.
  2. The area is cleaned and the edges of the damage prepared.
  3. We fill with a filler suited to the material and rebuild any missing edge.
  4. The colour and pattern are matched by hand.
  5. Finally we seal or finish the area to match.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area around the damage
  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift
  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings

What a repair can’t fix

Honesty matters more than a booking, so here’s what a repair will not do:

  • Cracks right through stone that has moved
  • Laminate swollen by water from underneath
  • Severe heat marks in quartz

Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Materials we repair

  • Granite & marble
  • Solid wood
  • Solid surface (such as Corian)
  • Laminate
  • Quartz

How to care for the repair

It’s all simple stuff, just a few sensible habits:

  • Keep a trivet by the hob
  • Keep wood oiled
  • Dry around the sink and joints
  • Don’t leave spills to soak in

Leave the repaired area free of hot or heavy items until it has cured. After that, trivets and chopping boards protect it best.

Do not leave damage by the sink, as water can get in and cause swelling.

Can I fix it myself?

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We remove the old filler and start again, so it does not stop a professional repair. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, then guarantee it for a year.
