Repairs by material

Solid surface

Solid surface materials are uniform throughout, so marks can often be sanded and refinished.

Wood

Wooden worktops can be sanded, filled and re-oiled, and burns and dents repaired.

Worktop repair in Thistle Hill without replacing anything

Laminate, quartz, granite, solid surface and wooden worktops can all be repaired, with colour and pattern matched by hand. Nothing is taken out. We regularly repair quartz, granite & marble and solid wood, and the jobs we see most are damage around the sink cut-out and a chipped edge.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. Just call us if there’s a problem and we’ll sort it.

How to look after the repair

How the surface is treated afterwards matters. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Use pH-neutral cleaners on stone
  • Clean spills immediately
  • Watch the edges with heavy pans
  • Dry around the sink and joints

Never put hot pans straight onto the worktop. Heat can mark quartz and stone as well.

Do not leave damage by the sink, as water can get in and cause swelling.

Can I fix it myself?

If you are set on a kit, follow its instructions closely and work on a clean, dry surface, and give it the full curing time. If it fails, we can still put it right.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler frequently lifts.

When to call us in Thistle Hill

Cut-outs for the sink and hob are the weakest parts, so cracks and chips frequently start there.

Look out for these signs:

  • Scratches and knife marks
  • Scorch marks from pans
  • Chips in quartz or granite
  • A chipped edge

10 questions to ask before you book

What worktop repair costs

Repairs from £95. We price every job individually. What matters most is:

  • The colour and finish to match
  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first
  • The type of damage
  • The material

Compared with replacing, a repair is usually a fraction of the price, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. The quote lists exactly what you are paying for.

Send photos for a quote

Good photos mean an accurate price. Here’s what helps:

  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
  • The material, if you know it
  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • One picture of the entire worktop

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: photograph the damage, then the entire worktop, add your postcode and send them to us. You will get a fixed price, not an estimate.

The process

When we visit, the technician arrives at the agreed time, protects the room with dust sheets and masking and gets started. Expect it to take a few hours, depending on the damage. We tidy up before we leave and let you know when you can use it again.

  1. First we look at the damage and what the worktop is made of.
  2. We clean the area and prepare the edges of the damage.
  3. We fill with a filler suited to the material and rebuild any missing edge.
  4. We match the colour and pattern by hand.
  5. We seal or finish the surface to suit the worktop.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure the area is dry
  • Have a window or extractor fan available
  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day

Repairing versus replacing in Thistle Hill

Replacing a worktop means taking out the damaged top, templating and fitting a replacement and reconnecting the sink and hob, and it may not match the rest of the kitchen. Repairing the damage keeps your existing worktop. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Send pictures and you will get a fixed figure.
