Repair or replace: which is better?

For a sound bath, resurfacing costs far less than replacement, when you count removal, plumbing, tiling and decorating. It’s also far quicker. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. Every job is a little different, so each one is priced on its own. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

How we handle bath re-enamelling in Ardley

When a bath is structurally fine but worn out on the surface, resurfacing is normally the best value. It avoids removal, plumbing and re-tiling. We work on acrylic baths, cast iron baths and Victorian roll-tops, and common reasons people get in touch are enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough and a coloured bath you want in white.

A one-year guarantee comes as standard, so you’re not left on your own once we’ve gone.

Aftercare tips

Simple care helps the repair last. Our advice:

  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Never use suction bath mats
  • Have chips seen to early
  • Stick to gentle, non-abrasive cleaners

Treat the new finish gently at first: give it the full curing time, then clean it gently. From then on, avoid abrasives and suction mats.

If a previous coating is starting to peel, do not pick at it. Moisture gets underneath and makes it worse, so have it stripped and resurfaced.

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £350. We charge the same across the UK, including Ardley. What changes the price is:

  • Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off
  • The material
  • What kind of damage it is
  • How many areas need work

There are no surprise extras on the day. What we quote from your photos is what you pay, and if the damage turns out to be different, we discuss it before starting.

Getting a price from photos

You can take the photos on your phone. Just ensure we can see:

  • One picture of the whole bath
  • What it’s made of, if you know
  • Details of any past repairs
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area

Ring 0345 017 0787, or send us pictures through the quote form. With a clear picture of the damage and one of the entire bath, we can give you a fixed price the same day in most cases.

The process

From the moment we arrive, we keep the work contained to the one room. Surfaces nearby are masked off, the job takes most of the day, depending on what we find, and we finish by cleaning up and talking you through the result.

  1. The room is masked, protected and ventilated.
  2. Next we degrease the bath and fix chips and rust spots.
  3. We prepare the surface and apply a bonding primer.
  4. Several coats of new finish are sprayed on.
  5. We leave it to cure, and it’s usually ready the day after.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know which floor the room is on
  • Open a window if you can
  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day

Ask for a price

Getting a price is easy: snap the damage close up and then the entire item, send them to us with your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed quote. Quotes are free and no obligation.

Different materials, different repairs

Acrylic

Acrylic baths can be resurfaced too, with a coating system suited to acrylic. It must be solid and not flex underfoot for the finish to last.

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

What a repair cannot fix

Not everything can be repaired, and we’d rather say so up front. We can’t fix:

  • Anything hidden under an old coating, until we remove it
  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber
  • A cast iron or steel bath that is cracked right through

Not sure? Send pictures and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Questions from Ardley

Is a repair better than a new one?

Usually, if the item is otherwise sound. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. If replacing would be better, we will say so.

Will there be fumes?

Some odour is normal while we spray, so we ventilate the room. It clears as the finish cures.

Is my repair covered?

All our work carries a one-year guarantee. We’ll explain what it covers when we quote.

Is it safe with children and pets around?

Please keep children and pets out of the room during the visit and until it has cured. Everywhere else in the home is fine.

How long will the bath be out of use?

Most baths are done in a day and can be used the day after. We’ll confirm timings when we quote.

Do you cover the entire of Oxfordshire?

We work UK-wide, so Ardley is covered. Our prices are the same everywhere.

What happens after I send pictures?

We come back with a fixed price, normally with dates to choose from. You’re under no obligation.

Can you make a coloured bath white?
