About our bath re-enamelling in Claypole

We clean, repair and prime the bath before spraying the new finish. The preparation is what makes it last, so we do not cut corners on it. We regularly repair acrylic baths, pressed steel baths and basins & shower trays, and people most frequently call us about a dull, rough surface that won’t come clean and worn patches where water runs and sits.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything is not right, ring us and we’ll come back.

Aftercare tips

It’s all simple stuff:

  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Wash away dyes and oils after use
  • Do not leave a chip unrepaired
  • Respect the curing time we give you

Rinse the bath and wipe it over after use, particularly where water is hard, to stop limescale building up.

Rust spots on a worn bath get worse with time. Resurfacing before they spread keeps it simpler.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

A DIY attempt is not a disaster. We remove the old filler and start again, so it doesn’t stop a professional repair. Just mention it when you send pictures, as it can add time.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

Different materials, different repairs

Roll-top and period baths

We can resurface a roll-top inside and out, and the outside can be refinished too.

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

What we’re called out for in Claypole

Once enamel loses its gloss, it stains more easily, and cleaning harder only makes it worse. At that stage, resurfacing is the fix.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • A peeling or bubbling previous coating
  • Several chips and rust patches
  • Enamel that is lost its shine and feels rough
  • A bath in a colour that no longer suits

Before booking anyone

  • How long it needs to cure
  • Is the price fixed, and does it include VAT?
  • If travel is included in the price
  • Whether they match the colour on site

Why repair rather than replace?

For a sound bath, resurfacing costs far less than replacement, once you add removal, plumbing, tiling and decorating to the price of a new bath. It’s also far quicker. Prices start from £350. What it costs depends on the type and amount of damage, the material and how many jobs we combine into one visit. You get a fixed price from your photos, so you know the cost before you book.

Why choose Surface Doctor in Claypole

  • CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited
  • A year’s guarantee on all work

Work for landlords and builders

We carry out planned and one-off repairs for housing associations and facilities teams. A repair avoids taking out and refitting, which is easier on the people living there.

Letting agents often send us pictures straight from the inventory. You can have a price before you arrange access, and we liaise with tenants about access if you’d like us to.

What we can’t put right

  • Holes rusted through the metal
  • Acrylic that moves when you stand in it
  • Problems we cannot see until an old finish comes off

Send us pictures and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Surfaces we repair

  • Pressed steel baths
  • Cast iron baths
  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Acrylic baths

How the visit works

When we visit, the technician arrives at the agreed time, protects the room with dust sheets and masking and gets started. Expect it to take most of the day. We tidy up before we leave and tell you when it’s ready to use.

  1. First we protect the bathroom and set up ventilation.
  2. We clean and degrease the bath and repair any chips or rust.
  3. The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
  4. Several coats of new finish are sprayed on.
  5. Once cured, normally by the following day, the bath is ready.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible
  • Let us know about parking or access
  • Keep pets and children out of the room while we work

Getting a price

There is no need for us to visit first. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will come back to you with a fixed figure.
