Bath re-enamelling for Garn-yr-erw homes

Bath re-enamelling in Garn-yr-erw without replacing anything

After re-enamelling, the bath has a smooth, glossy, new-looking surface, but without the cost and upheaval of a refit. It’s ideal if you like your bathroom but not the state of the bath. We work on acrylic baths, basins & shower trays and pressed steel baths, and people most often call us about a coloured bath you want in white and a roll-top that’s seen better days.

Big or small, you get the same one-year guarantee in Garn-yr-erw and across Torfaen.

What we’re called out for in Garn-yr-erw

Enamel does not fail overnight. Years of cleaning, hard water and hot baths dull the surface, generally first under the taps and around the waste.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • An old resurfacing that’s failing
  • Several chips and rust patches
  • Worn patches where water runs and sits
  • Staining under the taps and around the waste

10 questions to ask before booking

Garn-yr-erw questions

Is a repair better than a new one?

Generally, if the item is otherwise sound. A repair avoids removal and making good. If replacing would be better, we will say so.

Will you leave a mess?

No. The work area is masked and covered, and we take our waste away with us.

Can you do the outside of a roll-top?

Yes, frequently. The inside is resurfaced, and we can refinish the outside as well.

I rent my home. Can I book you?

Yes. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.

Is there a guarantee?

Every repair comes with a one-year guarantee. Ask us what it covers when you get your quote.

Can you resurface a pink bath in white?

Yes, most people go for white. Tell us what you’d like when you ask for a quote.

Will the bath be moved?

No. We resurface it in place, so nothing else is disturbed.

When can you do it?

We’ll give you dates with your quote. Tell us if you need it done quickly.

Prices and what affects them

Resurfacing from £350. We charge the same across the UK, including Garn-yr-erw. What changes the price is:

  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • Unusual colours or finishes
  • Doing more than one item at once
  • How much damage there is

Instead of hourly rates, we price the whole job up front. It depends on the damage, the material and access, and combining items on one visit brings it down.

Getting a price from photos

Before you send photos, a few simple things make all the difference:

  • A photo taken from further back
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • Any details about the material

There’s no need for us to visit first. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we’ll reply with a fixed quote.

Repairing versus replacing in Garn-yr-erw

For a sound bath, resurfacing costs far less than replacement, when you count removal, plumbing, tiling and decorating. It’s also far quicker. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. We don’t add extras on the day. The price we quote from your photos is the price you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

What we cannot put right

Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits:

  • Anything hidden under an old coating, until we remove it
  • A bath split right through the body
  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber

If in doubt, send photos and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Materials we repair

  • Acrylic baths
  • Cast iron baths
  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Pressed steel baths

How the visit works

On the day itself, there is little for you to do. Let us in and show us the room, and we will take it from there. Most visits take most of the day, including clearing up.

  1. We check the bath and agree the finish with you.
  2. Taps, tiles and the floor are masked off.
  3. We degrease the bath, fix any damage and key the surface.
  4. Primer and finish coats are applied.
  5. We remove the masking, tidy up and give you the curing time.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Keep a parking space free if you can
  • Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive

Related advice

Repairs by material

Cast iron

Re-enamelling suits cast iron baths perfectly. They’re built to last, and only the surface wears, so a new finish makes them look new again.

Pressed steel

Pressed steel baths take a new finish well, as long as any rust is dealt with first. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we check it carefully.

Looking after it afterwards

How the surface is treated afterwards matters. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Don’t leave bottles, razors or sponges standing on the surface
  • Wash away dyes and oils after use
  • Fix dripping taps quickly
  • Have chips seen to early

Give the finish its full curing time before using the bath. After that, a soft cloth and washing-up liquid is all it needs.

Avoid scrubbing a dull bath with abrasive cleaners. It removes more of the surface.

DIY kit or professional repair?

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Doing it properly first is generally the cheaper route.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, it’s worth having it done properly.
