- Problems we can’t see until an old finish comes off
- A bath that’s rusted through
Send us pictures and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Bath re-enamelling in Mackerel's Common, done in place
After re-enamelling, the bath has a smooth, glossy, new-looking surface, without any of the disruption of replacing it. It suits anyone happy with the bathroom apart from the bath. If you are dealing with lots of chips and rust spots and an old resurfacing that’s failing, we can generally put it right, on acrylic baths, basins & shower trays and pressed steel baths alike.
A one-year guarantee comes as standard.

What bath re-enamelling costs
Prices start from £350. There’s no area surcharge for Mackerel's Common. The price reflects:
- How many items we do on one visit
- The material and finish
- The type of damage
- Unusual colours or finishes
We don’t add extras on the day. What we quote from your photos is what you pay, and if the damage turns out to be different, we discuss it before starting.
How to get a fixed price
Almost every job we do is priced from pictures. This is what to send:
- The material, if you know it
- Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
- Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
- Something in shot to show the size
Most clients in Mackerel's Common get their price from photos. Tell us what happened and where you are, and we’ll reply with a fixed quote and the earliest dates we have.
When to call us in Mackerel's Common
A dull surface stains and holds dirt, and scrubbing it wears it down further. At that stage, resurfacing is the fix.
These are the problems we’re asked about most:
- Lots of chips and rust spots
- A dull, rough surface that will not come clean
- A peeling or bubbling previous coating
- A bath in a colour that no longer suits
Questions to ask before you book
- When it can be used again
- How the colour is matched
- What preparation is included
- A fixed price, and whether VAT is included
Looking after it afterwards
Nothing complicated is needed, just a few sensible habits:
- A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent
- Wipe the bath dry after use in hard water areas
- Keep suction mats out of the bath
Wait for the curing time we give you before the first bath. After that, a soft cloth and washing-up liquid is all it needs.
On a worn bath, rust spots keep spreading, and each one adds to the preparation. It’s simpler to resurface before they spread.
Repair or replace: which is better?
A refit takes several trades and several days. Re-enamelling takes one technician and generally one day, and the bath can be used the day after. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. The price depends on the type and amount of damage, what it’s made of and how many jobs we combine into one visit. You get a fixed price from your photos, so there are no surprises on the day.

Advice

Also in Mackerel's Common
Repairs by material
Pressed steel
Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.
Roll-top and period baths
Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.
Mackerel's Common questions
What does bath re-enamelling cost?
Resurfacing from £350. Every job gets a fixed quote based on photos of the damage. Send a close-up and a picture of the entire item and your postcode.
Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?
Generally, yes. A repair skips the removal, fitting and redecorating. We will be honest if it’s not worth it.
What do you need from me?
Use the quote form or ring 0345 017 0787.
Will it make a mess?
Dust sheets and masking go down before we start, and we clean up when we have finished.
Can pets and children be at home?
Please keep children and pets out of the room during the visit. Everywhere else in the home is fine.
I’m a tenant. Can you help?
Of course. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.
Is there any odour?
It depends on the job, but often a little. Open windows and an extractor fan help, and it soon fades.
How long will the bath be out of use?
One day for most baths and can be used the day after. We give you timings with the quote.
For landlords and businesses
Landlords, letting agents and housing providers in Mackerel's Common use us as well as householders. A repair between tenants keeps the property empty for less time, and it costs much less than replacing.
We regularly price jobs from inventory or check-out pictures. That means we can quote before you even visit the property, and we can arrange access with the tenant directly if that helps.
