How we handle bath re-enamelling in Okus

If your bath is sound but looks tired, resurfacing is normally the best value. It avoids removal, plumbing and re-tiling. Typical jobs include thin, worn enamel in places and a coating lifting around the plughole, in basins & shower trays, acrylic baths and Victorian roll-tops.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with the repair within the year, we return and sort it.

When we’d advise against a repair

A repair is not right for every job, for example:

  • A poorly supported acrylic bath, until it’s firmed up
  • A bath split right through the body
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)

Not sure? Send photos and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What we work on

  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Acrylic baths
  • Cast iron baths

Should I try a DIY kit first?

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can make a small mark look better. The trouble is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface is not prepared the repair won’t last.

Repairs by material

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that is the part we put right.

Acrylic

Acrylic baths can be resurfaced too, using a system that bonds to acrylic. It must be solid and not flex underfoot.

When to call us in Okus

Enamel’s shine is only skin deep, and every scrub with an abrasive cleaner takes a little away. After years of use, the surface becomes porous and stains easily.

Typical reasons for a call-out include:

  • A coating lifting around the plughole
  • Lots of chips and rust spots
  • Brown or grey marks that do not clean off
  • A dull, rough surface that won’t come clean

How to compare quotes

What affects the price in Okus

Resurfacing from £350. We charge the same across the UK, including Okus. What changes the price is:

  • How many items we do on one visit
  • The size and number of damaged areas
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • Unusual colours or finishes

No two jobs are quite the same, so each one is priced on its own. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Quotes from your pictures

A couple of clear pictures is all it takes. It helps if you send:

  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • A wider photo showing the entire bath
  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • What it’s made of, if you know

Send us pictures of the damage and one of the entire item, with your SN1 postcode, and we will come back with a fixed quote.

The process

We work cleanly and quietly, so you can stay at home while we’re there. Protection goes down first, then the job itself takes most of the day. At the end we talk you through the curing time and the aftercare.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. Old sealant is cut out and the bath is deep cleaned.
  3. Chips, rust and pitting are repaired.
  4. The surface is keyed and primed for the new finish.
  5. Several coats of finish are sprayed on, then it cures until the next day.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure the area is dry
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access

Getting a price

There is no need for us to visit first. Nearly every job can be priced from pictures: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed quote.

Advice

Should you replace it?

A replacement frequently means several trades over several days. Re-enamelling is one technician, normally one day. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. Our prices are the same across the UK, with no extra for Okus. What changes the price is the job itself: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Why Okus customers choose us

  • We leave the room as we found it
  • One-year guarantee on every repair
  • Generally one visit, start to finish
  • CHAS and Constructionline accredited

Read our prices page or resurfacing vs replacement cost guide.

How to care for the repair

A little care keeps the finish looking good. We recommend:

  • Use washing-up liquid and a soft cloth
  • Keep suction mats out of the bath
  • Don’t leave bottles, razors or sponges standing on the surface
  • Wipe the bath dry after use in hard water areas

Rinse the bath and wipe it over after use, especially in hard water areas, to stop limescale building up.

Rust spots on a worn bath get worse with time, and each one adds to the preparation. It’s simpler to resurface before they spread.

Okus questions

Is it messy?

No. The work area is masked and covered, and we take our waste away with us.

Does someone need to be in?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time we agree with you.

What happens after I send pictures?

You get a fixed price and available dates. If we need another angle, we’ll ask.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Yes, we often do. Removing the old work can add time, and that is in the quote.

How long does re-enamelling last?

It depends on preparation, use and care. With good preparation and gentle cleaning it lasts a long time, and our work is guaranteed for a year.

Do you hold any accreditations?

We hold CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile accreditations.

Is my repair covered?

Yes, for a year. If anything goes wrong with the repair within the year, we return to fix it.

What does bath re-enamelling cost?

Resurfacing from £350. Because every job differs, we price from pictures. You will get a fixed figure before you book.
