Bath re-enamelling in Portmead

DIY kit or professional repair?

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Doing it properly first is typically the cheaper route.

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it won’t stop us repairing it. Just mention it when you send photos, as it can add time.

Bath re-enamelling in Portmead, done in place

When a bath is structurally fine but worn out on the surface, re-enamelling is generally the most cost-effective option. There’s no removal, plumbing or tiling involved. We regularly repair cast iron baths, basins & shower trays and pressed steel baths, and the jobs we see most are a peeling or bubbling previous coating and enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If there’s a problem with the repair within the year, we return and sort it.

How we price bath re-enamelling

Prices start from £350. We price every job individually. What matters most is:

  • The colour and finish to match
  • How much damage there is
  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out

Compared with replacing, repairing generally costs far less, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.

Getting a price from photos

You can take the photos on your phone, there’s no need for anything special. Make sure they show:

  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • Where you are, by postcode
  • Details of any past repairs
  • A picture taken from further back

Getting a price is easy: take a close-up of the damage and a picture from further back, send them to us with your postcode, and you’ll get a fixed quote back. Quotes are free and you are under no obligation.

When we would advise against a repair

We would rather lose a job than do one that will not last, so here’s what a repair can’t put right:

  • Problems we cannot see until an old finish comes off
  • A bath that’s rusted through
  • A bath split right through the body

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think.

Materials we repair

  • Pressed steel baths
  • Cast iron baths
  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Acrylic baths
  • Basins & shower trays

When to call us in Portmead

Often the bath has just had decades of use, and only the surface is worn. Underneath, a cast iron or steel bath is generally as strong as ever.

Most people get in touch when they notice something like this:

  • Enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough
  • A bath in a colour that no longer suits
  • A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
  • An old resurfacing that’s failing

Comparing quotes

  • Whether there are any call-out or travel charges
  • What prep work is covered
  • Whether a trained technician does the job
  • How soon you can use it again

Choosing a repair company

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Pressed steel

Steel baths re-enamel well, as long as any rust is dealt with first. Steel frequently rusts by the plughole, so we check it carefully.

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.

How the visit works

Arrival times are agreed in advance, so you are not left guessing. Once we’re there, the work takes the best part of a day in most cases. We leave the room clean and ready to use once it has cured.

  1. The room is masked, protected and ventilated.
  2. We clean and degrease the bath and repair any chips or rust.
  3. The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
  4. We spray several coats of new enamel finish.
  5. We leave it to cure, and it’s normally ready the day after.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Clear the area around the damage
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Let us know about parking or access

Can you re-enamel a roll-top bath?

Yes. We can do the inside and outside.

Can you resurface a pink bath in white?

Yes. We can resurface a coloured bath in white, and we can do the rest of the suite as well.

Can you quote from photos?

Yes, almost always. Clear pictures let us give you a fixed quote without visiting.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Most of the time. Let us know what was used before and we’ll plan for it.

Repair or replace in Portmead?

If the bath is sound, re-enamelling is usually much cheaper than replacing it, once you add removal, plumbing, tiling and decorating to the price of a new bath. It’s also far quicker. Prices start from £350. A few things move the price: the amount of damage, the material, access to the area, and how many jobs we do in one trip. Send pictures and you will get a fixed figure.

Keeping it looking good

Once the work has cured, treat it gently:

  • Do not let dyes or oils sit on the finish
  • Leave the bath for the full curing time before using it
  • Don’t leave bottles, razors or sponges standing on the surface
  • Avoid suction-cup mats

Stick to mild, non-abrasive cleaners, don’t use suction bath mats, and keep bottles and razors off the surface.

Rust spots on a worn bath get worse with time and make the job bigger. Resurfacing before they spread keeps it simpler.
