Materials and what they mean for the repair

Acrylic

Acrylic feels warm and is light, but it needs firm support underneath. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

Pressed steel

Pressed steel baths take a new finish well, once any rust has been treated. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we check it carefully.

How we handle bath re-enamelling in Seatoller

Cast iron, steel, acrylic, roll-top and period baths can all be resurfaced. Several coats of finish go on over a bonding primer, once the bath has been cleaned, repaired and prepared. Whether it’s an outdated colour you’d like to change and wear marks under the taps, we can normally put it right, whatever the material.

You’re covered for a year from the day of the repair. If anything isn’t right, ring us and we’ll sort it.

Looking after it afterwards

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. A few tips:

  • Store bottles off the bath
  • Do not let dyes or oils sit on the finish
  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent
  • Repair dripping taps early

A quick rinse and wipe after use helps, particularly where water is hard, so limescale can’t build up.

Leave a peeling coating alone. Moisture gets underneath and makes it worse, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

When a repair is not the answer

In fairness, there are a few things a repair won’t fix:

  • Holes rusted through the metal
  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber
  • Problems we can’t see until an old finish comes off

Send us photos and we will tell you honestly before booking.

What bath re-enamelling costs

Resurfacing from £350. We charge the same across the UK, including Seatoller. What changes the price is:

  • What the surface is made of
  • The size and number of damaged areas
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • How many items we do on one visit

Most people are surprised how affordable a repair is, especially compared with replacing and refitting. Send pictures and we’ll give you the exact figure.

Send pictures for a quote

We price nearly every job from photos. This is what to send:

  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • A photo taken from further back

To get a price, send a couple of photos through our quote form or call us. We will tell you honestly if a repair is the right fix.

Seatoller questions

Do you cover the whole of Cumbria?

Across the UK. Prices do not change with location.

Is my repair covered?

All our work carries our one-year guarantee. We’ll explain what it covers when we quote.

What does bath re-enamelling cost?

Prices start from £350. We give a fixed quote based on pictures of the damage. Send a close-up of the damage and a wider photo with your CA12 postcode.

Can a failed resurfacing be redone?

Yes. Stripping the old coating adds time, so it’s reflected in the quote.

Can you re-enamel a roll-top bath?

Yes, often. We resurface the inside, and the outside can be refinished too.

How long does re-enamelling last?

A well-prepared finish lasts a long time if it’s looked after. Avoid abrasive cleaners and suction mats.

Can you price it without visiting?

Nearly always. We only ask to see it in person if the photos can’t show what we need.

Is there a call-out fee?

We do not add a call-out fee. The fixed price covers the visit and the work.

Repair or replace: which is better?

Replacing a cast iron bath is a big job: they’re heavy, frequently need breaking up, and a new one isn’t cheap. Re-enamelling avoids all of it. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. What it costs depends on how much damage there is and what kind, what it’s made of and how many items we do on one visit. We give a fixed quote from your photos, so you know the cost before booking.

What you get with us

  • No extra charge for your area
  • Free fixed quotes from pictures
  • We leave the room as we found it

What we do, step by step

We agree an arrival time beforehand, so you know when to expect us. On site, it takes most of the day for most jobs. The room is left tidy.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. We remove the old silicone and deep clean the bath.
  3. We repair chips, rust spots and pitting.
  4. We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
  5. Several coats of finish are sprayed on, then it cures until the day after.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking or access
  • Keep a parking space free if you can
  • Ensure the area is dry

Can I fix it myself?

A DIY attempt is not a disaster. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it won’t stop us repairing it. Just mention it when you send pictures, as it can add time.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

Landlord and trade work in Seatoller

Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs. Repairing in place avoids the disruption of a replacement, which is easier on the people living there.

Rented homes see more wear and tear, and replacing things at every changeover adds up. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.
