Different materials, different repairs
Roll-top and period baths
We can resurface a roll-top inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.
Acrylic
Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it needs firm support underneath. Repairs to cracks are reinforced from the back.
How we handle bath re-enamelling in Stella
We clean, repair and prime the bath before spraying the new finish. The preparation is what makes it last, so we do not cut corners on it. Whether it’s a dull, rough surface that won’t come clean and brown or grey marks that don’t clean off, we can normally put it right, whatever the material.
You’re covered after we leave: each job carries a one-year guarantee, and we’ll explain exactly what it covers when we quote.

Stella questions
Can you fix a peeling bath coating?
Typically, yes. The old coating comes off before we resurface it. Mention it when you send pictures.
Can you do the outside of a roll-top?
Yes, roll-tops are a big part of our work. We resurface the inside, and the outside can be refinished too.
Which areas do you work in?
The entire UK, including all of Newcastle upon Tyne. Just include your postcode and we will confirm dates.
Are you accredited?
We’re accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.
Is a repair better than a new one?
Generally, if the item is otherwise sound. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. We’ll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
Can I add another job to the visit?
Of course, and it generally saves money. Send pictures of everything together and you will get one combined price.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes: twelve months. If there’s a problem with the work in that time, we come back and put it right.
Do you come to Stella?
We do. We send a technician to Stella for every job, with no extra charge for travel.
How the visit works
A typical visit goes like this: we arrive at the agreed slot, protect everything around the work area, do the job and clear up. Allow most of the day from start to finish. Before we go, we will explain when it can be used and how to care for it.
- We mask and protect the room and ventilate it.
- The bath is cleaned, degreased and any chips or rust repaired.
- The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
- Several coats of new finish are sprayed on.
- Once cured, normally by the following day, the bath is ready.
How to prepare
- Tell us if there are stairs or a lift
- Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings
- Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive
Ask for a price
There’s no need for us to visit first. Nearly every job can be priced from photos: send a close-up, a wider shot and your postcode, and we will come back to you with a fixed figure.

What we cannot put right
We will always be straight with you, so here’s what a repair can’t fix:
- Problems we can’t see until an old finish comes off
- A cast iron or steel bath that is cracked right through
- Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)
If in doubt, send pictures and we will say what we think before booking.
Surfaces we repair
- Victorian roll-tops
- Acrylic baths
- Pressed steel baths
- Basins & shower trays
- Cast iron baths
Aftercare tips
After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:
- Respect the curing time we give you
- Stick to gentle, non-abrasive cleaners
- Have chips seen to early
- A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
A quick rinse and wipe after use helps, especially in hard water areas, to stop limescale building up.
Don’t try to scrub a worn bath back to shine. It just wears the enamel further.
Common problems we fix in Stella
Frequently the bath has just had decades of use, and only the surface is worn. Underneath, a cast iron or steel bath is generally as strong as ever.
The things clients normally mention when they call are:
- A bath that stays dull however much you clean it
- Worn patches where water runs and sits
- A roll-top that is seen better days
- Stains that will not shift

DIY kit or professional repair?
Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is typically the cheaper route.
The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, and the work is guaranteed.

For a sound bath, resurfacing costs far less than replacement, once you add removal, plumbing, tiling and decorating to the price of a new bath. It’s much quicker too. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. What it costs depends on the type and amount of damage, what it’s made of and how many jobs we combine into one visit.
