Bath re-enamelling in Steps without replacing anything

Resurfacing renews the whole surface of the bath without taking anything out. It suits baths that are dull, stained, rough or chipped all over. We work on Victorian roll-tops, cast iron baths and basins & shower trays, and the jobs we see most are worn patches where water runs and sits and a coating lifting around the plughole.

We guarantee the work for a year. If something is not right in that time, we come back and put it right.

Looking after it afterwards

It’s all simple stuff, just a few sensible habits:

  • Keep suction mats out of the bath
  • Rinse off hair dye, oils and bath bombs straight away
  • Store bottles off the bath
  • Stick to gentle, non-abrasive cleaners

Use mild, non-abrasive cleaners, don’t use suction bath mats, and do not leave bottles or razors standing on the surface.

The longer worn enamel is left, the rougher it gets, and any rust spreads underneath. Acting earlier keeps the preparation simpler.

What bath re-enamelling costs

Resurfacing from £350. Quotes are free and the price is fixed. What we take into account:

  • Where the damage is and how we get to it
  • How many areas need work
  • What the surface is made of
  • Unusual colours or finishes

We charge the same wherever you are, so there’s no premium for Steps. What changes the price is the job itself: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.

How to get a fixed quote

It only takes a minute to photograph the damage, and it saves a visit. Please include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Natural light rather than flash
  • A photo taken from further back
  • Details of any past repairs

For most jobs, photos are all we need to give you a price. Tell us what happened and where you are, and we’ll send back a fixed quote and some dates.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We remove the old filler and start again, so it will not stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

When to call us in Steps

Sometimes it’s an earlier resurfacing that has failed, peeling around the waste or bubbling. Failing coatings are stripped back before we resurface.

People usually call us after spotting one of these:

  • Staining under the taps and around the waste
  • An original cast iron bath that needs restoring
  • An old resurfacing that’s failing
  • Enamel that is lost its shine and feels rough

What your quote should include

  • How the colour is matched
  • How to care for the finish
  • If travel is included in the price
  • Who will actually do the work

FAQs for Steps

Can a failed resurfacing be redone?

Yes. Stripping the old coating adds time, so it’s reflected in the quote.

Can you do the outside of a roll-top?

Yes. Inside and out.

Can you repair several things at once?

Yes. Doing several items on one visit generally costs less than separate visits. Include pictures of each item.

Will you leave a mess?

No. The work area is masked and covered, and we leave the room clean.

Is repairing better than replacing?

Generally, yes. A repair skips the removal, fitting and redecorating. If it isn’t worth repairing, we will tell you.

Will the new finish last?

That depends on preparation and how the bath is treated. Properly prepared and looked after, it lasts well, and our work is guaranteed for a year.

Does someone need to be in?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time that suits you.

What do you need from me?

Just pictures, your postcode and a contact number. On the day, access to the room.

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are the classic candidate for re-enamelling. The body lasts for generations; only the enamel wears, so a new finish makes them look new again.

Pressed steel

Pressed steel baths take a new finish well, once any rust has been treated. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we pay close attention there.

How it works

Arrival times are agreed in advance, so you’re not left guessing. Once we’re there, the work takes the best part of a day. We leave the room clean and ready to use once it has cured.

  1. First we protect the bathroom and set up ventilation.
  2. We clean and degrease the bath and repair any chips or rust.
  3. We key the surface and put on a bonding primer.
  4. Several coats of new finish are sprayed on.
  5. Once cured, normally by the following day, the bath is ready.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day
  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings
  • Ensure the area is dry

How to get a price

We price from pictures so you don’t have to wait in for a survey. Send them through the quote form, or call 0345 017 0787 if you’d rather talk it through, and you’ll get a fixed figure back.

Advice

Why repair rather than replace?

Replacement only makes sense in a few cases: if the bath is cracked through, if you want a different size or shape, or if you are refitting the whole room anyway. In most other cases, resurfacing is the better choice. Prices start from £350. No two jobs are quite the same, so we price each one individually. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all make a difference, and combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down.

Why us?

  • A year’s guarantee on all work
  • One visit for most repairs

What we can’t put right

Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits:

  • Damage hidden under a previous coating, until it’s stripped back
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • A bath that’s rusted through

Send us pictures and we will tell you honestly.
