Cast iron, steel, acrylic, roll-top and period baths can all be resurfaced. Several coats of finish go on over a bonding primer, after the bath has been cleaned, repaired and keyed. Whether it’s an original cast iron bath that needs restoring and enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough, we can usually put it right.

Keeping it looking good

So the finish stays in good condition:

  • Store bottles off the bath
  • Use washing-up liquid and a soft cloth
  • Wash away dyes and oils after use
  • Avoid suction-cup mats

Wait for the curing time we give you before the first bath. After that, a soft cloth and washing-up liquid is all it needs.

The longer worn enamel is left, the rougher it gets, and rust spots spread under the surface. Resurfacing sooner means less repair work first.

What we do, step by step

You do not need to empty the room beforehand. We bring everything we need with us, lay protective sheets and start once you are happy with the plan. Most jobs take the best part of a day, and you can get on with other things while we are there.

  1. We mask and protect the room and ventilate it.
  2. We clean and degrease the bath and repair any chips or rust.
  3. The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
  4. We spray several coats of new enamel finish.
  5. Once cured, normally by the day after, the bath is ready.

Before we arrive

  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Let us know if it has been repaired before
  • Let us know which floor the room is on

Advice

Repair or replace in Stoke Lodge?

If you like your bathroom but not your bath’s surface, resurfacing is the simplest answer. Tiles, panels and taps stay put. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: the amount of damage, the material, access to the area, and how many jobs we do in one trip. Send pictures and you will get a fixed figure.

Why choose Surface Doctor in Stoke Lodge

  • One price list for the entire UK
  • A fixed quote before you book
  • Accredited with CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor
  • Work done at your home or business

See our prices page and guide to resurfacing and replacement costs.

What affects the price in Stoke Lodge

Resurfacing from £350. A fixed quote means you know the cost before you book. We take into account:

  • The material
  • The size and number of damaged areas
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • Unusual colours or finishes

Every job is a little different, so each one is priced on its own. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Getting a price from photos

You can normally get a fixed quote without us visiting. To make it quick:

  • Details of any past repairs
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Natural light rather than flash

Ring 0345 017 0787, or send us pictures through the quote form. With a clear picture of the damage and one of the whole bath, we can price the job without visiting.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, and the work is guaranteed.

If you do try a kit, read the instructions carefully, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it does not work out, we can still repair it properly.

Honest limits

Some problems need a builder, plumber or fitter rather than us:

  • Problems we cannot see until an old finish comes off
  • Holes rusted through the metal
  • Acrylic that moves when you stand in it

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think before you book.

Stoke Lodge: your questions answered

What happens next?

We come back with a fixed price, plus dates. There’s no obligation to book.

How do I book?

Photos of the damage, a picture of the entire bath and your postcode. After that, we just agree a date.

Do the materials smell?

Some materials have a smell while they’re applied, which is why we ventilate. It clears as the materials cure.

What if the damage is worse than the photos show?

It’s rare, but if it happens we talk to you first. The price only changes if you agree.

Is it messy?

Very little mess: we sheet and mask everything nearby, and we leave the room clean.

Is a repair better than a new one?

Generally, when the rest is in good condition. A repair avoids removal and making good. We will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Of course, and it generally saves money. Send pictures of everything together and you’ll get one combined price.

How long will the bath be out of use?

Generally one day, with the bath ready the next day. A badly pitted bath can need a second day.

Common problems we fix in Stoke Lodge

In hard water areas, limescale and the cleaning it needs wear enamel faster, and gritty cleaners are the worst culprits.

You may need us if you’ve spotted:

  • Lots of chips and rust spots
  • A bath that stays dull however much you clean it
  • A peeling or bubbling previous coating
  • Worn patches where water runs and sits

What your quote should include

  • How the room is protected while they work
  • The length of the guarantee and what it covers
  • Who will actually do the work
  • Is the price fixed, and does it include VAT?

What your bath is made of matters

Roll-top and period baths

We can resurface a roll-top inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it needs firm support underneath. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.
