When a repair isn’t the answer

A repair isn’t always the answer, and we will tell you before we start. We can’t fix:

  • A poorly supported acrylic bath, until it’s firmed up
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)
  • Damage hidden under a previous coating, until it’s stripped back

Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

What we work on

  • Cast iron baths
  • Acrylic baths
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Victorian roll-tops

Bath re-enamelling in Uplands without replacing anything

Many of the baths we re-enamel are period roll-tops, which would be difficult and expensive to replace. Doing them in place keeps an original feature. We’re frequently asked to fix lots of chips and rust spots and a peeling or bubbling previous coating, across pressed steel baths, cast iron baths and Victorian roll-tops.

All our work comes with our one-year guarantee.

DIY kit or professional repair?

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it doesn’t stop a professional repair. Just mention it when you send photos, as it can add time.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, a professional repair is worth it.

What happens on the day

Your technician turns up at the time we agreed with you, introduces themselves and checks the damage against your pictures first. Dust sheets and masking tape go down before we open a single tin. The work itself takes the best part of a day, and the room is left clean and tidy.

  1. The room is masked, protected and ventilated.
  2. Next we degrease the bath and fix chips and rust spots.
  3. We key the surface and put on a bonding primer.
  4. We spray several coats of new enamel finish.
  5. The bath is left to cure and can normally be used the following day.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Open a window if you can
  • Tell us about parking, stairs or access
  • Let the surface dry out before the visit

Repairing versus replacing in Uplands

Replacing a bath can take several days across several trades. Resurfacing takes one technician and typically a day, with the bath back in use the next day. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. A repair is priced on what needs doing, not your postcode. You’ll see the full price before booking, with no extras added later.

Repairs by material

Pressed steel

Pressed steel baths take a new finish well, as long as any rust is dealt with first. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we pay close attention there.

Acrylic

Acrylic baths can be resurfaced too, using a system that bonds to acrylic. The bath needs to be firm and well supported.

How to look after the repair

Once the work has cured, treat it gently:

  • Keep suction mats out of the bath
  • Wipe the bath dry after use in hard water areas
  • Don’t use the bath until it has fully cured
  • Keep toiletries on a shelf rather than in the bath

Rinse the bath and wipe it over after use, especially in hard water areas, to stop limescale building up.

Leave a peeling coating alone. Water gets under it and the damage spreads, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

Uplands questions

When can you do it?

That depends on our diary for your area. Send photos with your postcode and we’ll reply with the earliest dates.

Do you need to take the bath out?

No. It’s re-enamelled where it stands, so the tiles and taps stay put.

Can you repair several things at once?

Yes. Doing several items on one visit typically costs less than separate visits. Send pictures of everything you’d like done.

Can a failed resurfacing be redone?

In most cases. The old coating comes off before we resurface it. Mention it when you send pictures.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Generally, yes. The old repair comes out first.

How long does re-enamelling last?

That depends on preparation and how the bath is treated. Properly prepared and looked after, it lasts well, and it’s guaranteed for a year.

Do I have to be there?

Someone needs to let us in and show us the job. You do not need to watch us work.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Normally, when the rest is in good condition. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. If replacing would be better, we’ll say so.

What we’re called out for in Uplands

Enamel’s shine is only skin deep, and every scrub with an abrasive cleaner takes a little away. After years of use, the surface becomes porous and stains easily.

Keep an eye out for these signs:

  • Brown or grey marks that don’t clean off
  • A dull, rough surface that won’t come clean
  • A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
  • A coloured bath you want in white
