How we handle bath re-enamelling in Wyke

Cast iron, steel, acrylic, roll-top and period baths can all be resurfaced. Several coats of finish go on over a bonding primer, after the bath has been cleaned, repaired and keyed. Whether it’s worn patches where water runs and sits and an outdated colour you’d like to change, we can normally put it right, whatever the material.

The work is guaranteed for twelve months. If something is not right in that time, we come back and put it right.

Honest limits

We will always be straight with you, so here’s what a repair cannot fix:

  • A cast iron or steel bath that’s cracked right through
  • Holes rusted through the metal
  • Anything hidden under an old coating, until we remove it

If in doubt, send photos and we’ll say what we think before you book.

What we work on

  • Cast iron baths
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Acrylic baths

Repair or replace: which is better?

A refit takes several trades and several days. Re-enamelling takes one technician and usually one day, with the bath ready the following day. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: the amount of damage, the material, access to the area, and how many jobs we do in one trip. Photos let us give you a fixed figure.

Why Wyke clients choose us

  • Colour-matched on site
  • We come to you, anywhere in the UK
  • Usually one visit, start to finish
  • No extra charge for your area

Looking after it afterwards

Nothing complicated is needed:

  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Do not leave bottles, razors or sponges standing on the surface
  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent
  • Don’t use the bath until it has fully cured

Stick to mild, non-abrasive cleaners, don’t use suction bath mats, and keep bottles and razors off the surface.

Worn enamel only gets rougher with time, and any rust spreads underneath. Acting earlier keeps the preparation simpler.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

If you are set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, and give it the full curing time. If it fails, we can still put it right.

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.

Acrylic

Acrylic baths can be resurfaced too, with a coating system suited to acrylic. The bath needs to be firm and well supported.

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £350. Prices are worked out job by job. The main factors are:

  • Access to the area
  • The size and number of damaged areas
  • The type of damage
  • The colour and finish to match

A repair normally costs much less than people expect, especially compared with replacing and refitting. Send photos and we will give you the exact figure.

Send pictures for a quote

Almost every job we do is priced from pictures. This is what we need:

  • Any details about the material
  • A photo taken from further back
  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • Where you are, by postcode

There’s no need for us to visit first. Nearly every job can be priced from photos: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we’ll reply with a fixed price.

Wyke: your questions answered

Can you quote from pictures?

Nearly always. If pictures do not show enough, we’ll ask for another angle.

What areas do you cover?

The whole UK, including all of Surrey. Send your postcode with your pictures and we’ll confirm dates.

It’s been repaired before. Can you still fix it?

Yes, we frequently do. Removing the old work can add time, and that is in the quote.

When can you do it?

Your quote comes with available dates. If it’s urgent, say so and we will do what we can.

Can pets and children be at home?

Keep pets and children away from the work area on the day, so the repair is not disturbed while it cures.

What if the damage is worse than the pictures show?

The price is fixed for what the photos show. If there’s more, we will tell you before starting.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

In most cases, yes. Replacement brings removal, refitting and making good, which a repair avoids. We will be honest if it’s not worth it.

Can tenants book a repair?

Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Many landlords are happy for a repair to be arranged before the end of a tenancy.

The process

Expect a friendly, tidy visit. We confirm the time with you beforehand, protect the area, then carry out the work, which usually takes most of the day. If we find something your photos didn’t show, we’ll explain it before carrying on.

  1. The room is masked, protected and ventilated.
  2. The bath is cleaned, degreased and any chips or rust repaired.
  3. The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
  4. We spray on the new enamel finish in several coats.
  5. We leave it to cure, and it’s normally ready the day after.
