DIY repairs versus a professional job

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is typically cheaper.

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

Bath repair in Clock Face without replacing anything

Small damage on a bath is worth repairing early. On steel and cast iron, exposed metal starts to rust, and on acrylic, a crack keeps spreading while the bath flexes. Repairing it stops the damage getting worse. We work on pressed steel enamel, acrylic and whirlpool & spa baths, and people most often call us about holes from dropped items and deep scratches in acrylic.

Peace of mind is built in: each job carries a one-year guarantee, and we explain what it covers before booking.

The process

The work is clean and fairly quiet, so you can stay at home while we are there. We protect the area first, then the job itself takes a few hours, depending on the damage. Before we leave, we explain the curing time and the aftercare.

  1. First, we check the damage against your pictures and agree the plan.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. We build up the filler in layers, shaping it to the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

Do you need bath repair in Clock Face?

Rust usually starts where water sits, around the waste, under the taps or in an old chip. Water on bare metal causes rust that creeps under the surrounding enamel.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Cracks in an acrylic bath
  • Chips caused by builders
  • Holes from dropped items
  • A chipped rim or side

Looking after it afterwards

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. These habits help:

  • Ensure an acrylic bath is firm underfoot
  • Cover the bath during DIY or decorating
  • Store metal items away from the bath
  • Have new chips seen to early

For the first few days, keep heavy bottles off the repaired spot. After that, normal gentle cleaning is fine without abrasive products.

Until we visit, a strip of waterproof tape over the damage helps, so water can’t get in. Take it off before we arrive.

Questions from Clock Face

Is it safe with children and pets around?

Yes, as long as they stay out of the room we are working in. We will let you know when it’s safe to use again.

What happens next?

We come back with a fixed quote. You are under no obligation.

What information do you need?

Use the quote form or ring 0345 017 0787, and we will do the rest.

Can you match an avocado or pink bath?

Yes, we match coloured baths too. We tint the finish to your bath on site.

Will the price change on the day?

Your quote covers the damage in the pictures. If there is more, we will tell you before starting.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

In most cases, yes. Replacement brings removal, refitting and making good, which a repair avoids. We’ll be honest if it’s not worth it.

What does bath repair cost?

Prices start from £95. Every job gets a fixed quote based on photos of the damage. Send a close-up of the damage and a wider photo and your postcode.

What affects the price in Clock Face

Prices start from £95. We give every job a fixed price from photos. This is what makes a difference:

  • Doing more than one item at once
  • What kind of damage it is
  • What the surface is made of
  • Where the damage is and how we get to it

Every job is a little different, so we price each one individually. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down.

How to get a fixed price

It only takes a minute to photograph the damage, and it saves a visit. Please include:

  • Any earlier repairs or coatings
  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection
  • Any details about the material

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: photograph the damage, then the whole bath, include your postcode and send them to us. What comes back is a fixed quote, not a guess.

Repairing versus replacing in Clock Face

If the rest of the bath is in good condition, a repair is almost always the better choice. It’s quicker, cheaper and far less disruptive, and the bathroom stays as it is. If the whole surface is worn, re-enamelling may make more sense, and we’ll tell you. Our bath repair starts from £95. The price depends on how much damage there is and what kind, the material and how many jobs we combine into one visit. You get a fixed quote from your pictures, so there are no surprises on the day.

When a repair isn’t the answer

A repair isn’t right for every job, including:

  • A whole bath that is dull or worn, where a full re-enamel is the better fix
  • Leaking fittings, which need a plumber
  • Rust that has eaten right through a steel bath

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think.

Surfaces we repair

  • Cast iron enamel
  • Roll-top & freestanding
  • Pressed steel enamel
  • Acrylic
  • Whirlpool & spa baths

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Acrylic

An acrylic bath is a moulded sheet strengthened from below. They do not rust, but they can crack, scratch or be holed, and a crack only stays repaired if it’s supported underneath.

Pressed steel

Pressed steel is thinner and lighter, with an enamel finish like cast iron. Chips rust quickly on steel, particularly by the plughole, so early repairs matter.
