Materials and what they mean for the repair

Pressed steel

Steel baths are lighter than cast iron, but have a similar enamel surface. Chips rust quickly on steel, especially around the waste, so early repairs matter.

Composite and resin

Stone resin and composite baths are heavy and solid. Chips and scratches are filled and matched, just like other baths.

For landlords and businesses

For anyone letting property in or around Common Moor, we’ll quote for several properties at once. Just send photos for each address and we will price them together.

Rental properties take more wear, and replacing items every time a tenant leaves is expensive. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.

Why repair rather than replace?

Cast iron baths in particular are worth repairing: they’re very heavy to remove, especially upstairs, and a like-for-like replacement can be expensive. Repairing it leaves it where it is. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. We charge the same wherever you are, with no extra for Common Moor. What changes the price is the job itself: how much damage, what it’s made of and how many items.

Why us?

  • Straight answers about what a repair can do
  • Colour mixed on the day to match

How it works

A typical visit goes like this: we arrive on time, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and clear up. Plan for a few hours. Before we go, we will explain how long to leave it and how to look after it.

  1. We start by looking at the damage and confirming the plan with you.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. We build up the filler in layers, shaping it to the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

How to prepare

DIY kit or professional repair?

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but the repairs we redo most frequently are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is typically cheaper.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, it’s worth having it done properly.

When we’d advise against a repair

Some problems need a builder, plumber or fitter rather than us:

  • Acrylic cracks with no access behind them
  • A bath that flexes because its feet or cradle have failed (that needs fixing first)
  • Metal that has corroded all the way through

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Questions from Common Moor

Can you repair a crack in an acrylic bath?

Most of the time. The back of the crack is strengthened before the front is filled and refinished, so access behind the panel is important.

What happens next?

You get a fixed price and available dates. If we need another angle, we’ll ask.

Is a bath repair permanent?

A properly prepared repair should last a long time, and ours come with a one-year guarantee. Gentle cleaning helps.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes, for a year. If there is a problem with the work in that time, we come back and put it right.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down. Send pictures of everything you’d like done.

Can you quote from pictures?

Generally, yes. Clear photos let us give you a fixed price without visiting.

What about rust by the waste?

Yes. We take out the rust and any loose enamel, seal and fill the area, then colour-match the finish.

Does someone need to be in?

Yes. We need access to the room while we work, at a time we agree with you.

Aftercare tips

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. A few tips:

  • Keep abrasive pads and gritty cleaners away from the bath
  • Use a soft cloth and washing-up liquid for everyday cleaning
  • Rinse the bath after use, especially in hard water areas
  • A dripping tap stains enamel, so fix it early

Give the repair the full curing time we recommend before using the bath. From then on, mild cleaning is all it needs.

Stop using the bath if a crack lets water through. Leaks under a bath can damage floors and ceilings.
