DIY repairs versus a professional job

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. The trouble is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface is not prepared the repair won’t last.

A DIY attempt isn’t a disaster. We remove the old filler and start again, so it doesn’t stop a professional repair. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

Bath repair in Dowally, done in place

A repair fixes just the damaged area and blends it into the rest of the bath, which costs far less than replacing a fitted bath. You can generally use the bath the next day. We regularly repair whirlpool & spa baths, cast iron enamel and acrylic, and people most often call us about a failed DIY repair that’s discoloured or lifting and deep scratches in acrylic.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. Just call us if there is a problem and we will sort it.

Dowally: your questions answered

What happens once I’ve sent photos?

We review the photos and send a fixed quote.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Usually, when the rest is in good condition. A repair avoids removal and making good. If replacing would be better, we’ll say so.

Will you leave a mess?

Very little mess: we sheet and mask everything nearby, and we leave the room clean.

How long before I can use the bath?

Generally the day after. We confirm the time before we leave.

Can I get a quote without a visit?

In nearly every case. We only ask to see it in person if the photos cannot show what we need.

Which areas do you work in?

The whole UK, including all of Perth and Kinross. Just include your postcode and we will offer you dates.

What happens if you find more damage?

We will show you and explain before doing anything extra. You will not be charged for anything you haven’t agreed.

Is a cracked acrylic bath repairable?

Usually, yes, as long as we can get to the back of the crack to support it. Check under the bath panel, or send us a picture.

How we price bath repair

Prices start from £95. There is no charge for travel to Dowally. The price depends on:

  • Where the damage is and how we get to it
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • Unusual colours or finishes
  • The size and number of damaged areas

Compared with replacing, repairing usually costs far less, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. The quote lists exactly what you are paying for.

How to get a fixed quote

We price nearly every job from photos. This is what we need:

  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • Natural light rather than flash
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A picture taken from further back

For most jobs, pictures are all we need to give you a price. Tell us what happened and where you are, and we’ll send back a fixed quote and some dates.

Looking after it afterwards

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Don’t scrub with anything abrasive
  • Keep metal cans and razors off the surface
  • Use a soft cloth and washing-up liquid for everyday cleaning
  • Give the bath a quick rinse after use

There’s nothing special to do after a repair, beyond gentle cleaning. Avoid bleach-based and gritty cleaners.

If an acrylic bath has a crack, stop showering in it until it’s repaired. Every use opens the crack a little more, and water can get through to the floor below.

How it works

When we visit, the technician arrives at the agreed time, protects the room with dust sheets and masking and gets started. Expect it to take two to three hours for most chips. We clean up when we are done and let you know when you can use it again.

  1. First, we check the damage against your photos and agree the plan.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

How to prepare

  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Have a window or extractor fan available

Advice

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Acrylic

Acrylic baths are moulded sheet reinforced underneath. There’s no rust, but cracks, holes and scratches happen, and cracks need support from behind to stay fixed.

Pressed steel

Steel baths are lighter than cast iron, but have a similar enamel surface. Exposed steel rusts fast, particularly by the plughole, so early repairs matter.

Signs you need bath repair in Dowally

Rust tends to begin where water collects, by the plughole, beneath dripping taps or in an unrepaired chip. Water on bare metal causes rust that creeps under the surrounding enamel.

If you can see any of these, send us a photo:

  • A kit repair that didn’t last
  • Holes from dropped items
  • Damage done while the bathroom was being fitted
  • Rust spots around the plughole

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the price is fixed and includes VAT
  • What aftercare is recommended
  • What happens if they find more damage
  • What protection goes down before work starts

Our hiring checklist

Why repair rather than replace?

Replacing a fitted bath normally involves a plumber, lifting out the old bath, making good the tiles and panel and disposing of the old one. A repair deals only with the damage in a single visit. Prices start from £95. A few things move the price: the amount of damage, the material, access to the area, and how many jobs we do in one trip. Photos let us give you a fixed figure.

Why Dowally clients choose us

  • Dust sheets down, tidy finish
  • Most jobs done in one visit
  • Same prices wherever you are
  • We’ll tell you if it’s not worth repairing

Work for landlords and builders

Rented homes see more wear and tear, and replacing things at every changeover adds up. Repairing between tenants keeps the property presentable for less.

We carry out planned and one-off repairs for housing associations and facilities teams in Perth and Kinross and across the UK. Repairing in place avoids the disruption of a replacement, which is easier on the people living there.
