Acrylic bath corner rebuilt by Surface Doctor, before and after

Different materials, different repairs

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

Acrylic

An acrylic bath is a moulded sheet strengthened from below. There’s no rust, but cracks, holes and scratches happen, and cracks need support from behind to stay fixed.

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple:

  • Store metal items away from the bath
  • Don’t scrub with anything abrasive
  • Put a towel in the bath if you are working above it
  • Make sure an acrylic bath is firm underfoot

Look after the repair the same way as the bath: a soft cloth and washing-up liquid is all it needs. Avoid scourers and gritty cream cleaners.

Rust under enamel spreads surprisingly quickly. Left for months, a small chip can grow into a large rust patch, so it pays to deal with it early.

What affects the price in The Heath

Repairs from £95. Each job gets its own fixed price. This is what makes a difference:

  • Doing more than one item at once
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • How many areas need work

What it costs depends on how much damage there is and what kind, what it’s made of and how many items we do on one visit. We give a fixed quote from your photos, so there are no surprises on the day.

Getting a price from pictures

A couple of clear pictures is all it takes. Try to include:

  • A wider photo showing the whole bath
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • Where you are, by postcode
  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before

Upload a picture of the damage and one of the entire item, with your IP9 postcode, and we’ll reply with a fixed price.

How the visit works

Once we are through the door, we keep the work contained to the one room. We mask off everything nearby, the job takes a few hours, and we finish by cleaning up and talking you through the result.

  1. We start by cleaning the damage and taking out loose enamel and rust.
  2. We fill the damage and sand it flush with the surrounding surface.
  3. We tint the finish on the day to suit your bath’s shade of white or colour.
  4. Finish coats go on, then the repair is polished to blend in.
  5. We leave it to cure; you can usually use the bath the day after.

Before we arrive

  • Point us to the nearest place to park
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Open a window if you can

How to get a price

Advice

Work for landlords and builders

Letting agents frequently send us photos straight from the inventory. You can have a price before you arrange access, and we liaise with tenants about access if you’d like us to.

We work for landlords, letting agents and housing providers in The Heath as well as homeowners. A repair between tenants keeps the property empty for less time, and it normally costs far less than a refit.

The Heath: your questions answered

When can I have a bath again?

Usually the next day. We’ll tell you the exact curing time when we finish.

Can tenants book a repair?

We’re happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Just ensure the landlord agrees.

Is a holed acrylic bath repairable?

In most cases. Photos of the hole and the underside help us check.

Can you repair a failed DIY repair?

Regularly. The old material comes out, any rust is treated, then we repair it properly.

What does bath repair cost?

Prices start from £95. Because every job differs, we price from photos. You know the full cost before anything is booked.

Is it safe with children and pets around?

Yes, as long as they stay out of the room we are working in. We’ll let you know when it’s safe to use again.

Can you repair a chip on a coloured bath?

Yes, coloured baths are no problem. We tint the finish to your bath on site.

What happens once I’ve sent pictures?

You get a fixed quote and available dates. If anything’s unclear, we will ask for another photo.

Repairing versus replacing in The Heath

A new bath brings a chain of other jobs: the tiles sitting on the rim tend to break, the panel may not fit the new one, and a plumber has to disconnect and reconnect everything. A repair skips all of it. Prices start from £95. Set against the cost of replacement, a repair is normally a fraction of the price, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.

Why The Heath clients choose us

  • Colour mixed on the day to match
  • Everything repaired in place
  • One-year guarantee on every repair
  • Honest advice, even when it means no job

DIY repairs versus a professional job

If you are set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, ensure the area is clean and completely dry, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it doesn’t work out, we can still repair it properly.

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it does not stop a professional repair. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

Do you need bath repair in The Heath?

Rust tends to begin where water collects, by the plughole, beneath dripping taps or in an unrepaired chip. Once water reaches the steel or iron, rust spreads under the enamel.

You may need us if you’ve spotted any of these:

  • Cracks in an acrylic bath
  • A chip where the taps sit
  • Holes from dropped items
  • Chips on the rim or sides

Questions to ask before you book

  • How your room will be protected
  • Whether they match the colour on site
  • When it can be used again
  • Who will actually do the work
