How we handle bath resealing in Scatness

Baths are resealed with water in them, so the joint opens fully, which stops the new seal tearing the first time the bath is used. If you’re dealing with silicone coming away from the tiles and gaps by the taps, we can usually put it right, on shower trays & enclosures, basins & vanity units and wet rooms alike.

A one-year guarantee comes as standard, so you are covered after the visit.

The process

Your technician turns up when we said we would, introduces themselves and checks the damage against your photos first. Dust sheets and masking tape go down before we open a single tin. Most visits take a couple of hours, and the room is left clean and tidy.

  1. All the old sealant is cut out and removed.
  2. We clean the joint and treat any mould.
  3. We dry the joint thoroughly.
  4. We fill a bath with water before sealing so the gap is at its widest.
  5. We apply new mould-resistant silicone and tool it to a neat finish, taps included.

Scatness questions

My seal keeps tearing. Why?

Usually because the bath or tray moves. We fill the bath before sealing it.

How quickly can you book me in?

That depends on our diary for your area. Send pictures with your postcode and we will reply with the earliest dates.

What happens once I’ve sent pictures?

We check the damage, the material and your postcode, then reply with a quote.

Can you repair something that is been repaired before?

Yes, regularly. Removing the old work can add time, and that is in the quote.

Why does mould come back so fast?

Mostly moisture and poor ventilation. We use mould-resistant silicone, and ventilation helps it last.

Will there be a smell?

It depends on the job, but often a little. Ventilation keeps it to a minimum.

How long does silicone take to cure?

Normally after around 24 hours. We’ll tell you the exact time.

What do you need from me?

A close-up, a wider photo and your postcode. Then we’ll agree a date.

Why reseal now?

Compared with repairing water damage, resealing is cheap. It’s a quick job that protects your walls and floors. Every job is a little different, so we price each one individually. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down.

Aftercare tips

Once the work has cured, treat it gently:

  • Clean the sealant gently and regularly
  • Keep the joints dry
  • Ventilate the bathroom well
  • Store bottles on a shelf

Avoid scraping the joints, and don’t stand bottles on the seal.

Reseal before water gets in. Split or lifting sealant is a sign it’s time.

What a repair cannot fix

We will not take on work that will not last, so here’s what a repair can’t put right:

  • Hollow or loose tiles
  • Movement in the bath or tray
  • Water damage behind the bath that needs a builder

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Materials we work on in Scatness

Work for landlords and builders

If you manage property in Scatness, we will quote for several properties at once. Just send photos for each address and we will price them together.

We also carry out snagging repairs for builders and developers, fixing chips and scratches before handover. We hold CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accreditations.

DIY kit or professional repair?

If you do try a kit, read the instructions carefully and work on a clean, dry surface, and give it the full curing time. If it fails, we can still put it right.

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it will not stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

When to call us in Scatness

A bathroom without good ventilation is hard on sealant: moisture sits on the joints longer, and mould grows faster.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • Mould you cannot clean out
  • Gaps in the seal
  • Gaps by the taps
  • Stained silicone
