How bath resealing works in the Shetland Islands

Preparation is everything in a reseal: every bit of old silicone out, mould treated, the joint clean and dry. Only then does the new sealant go on, as one neat, continuous bead. We work on basins & vanity units, wet rooms and kitchen worktops & sinks, and people most often call us about silicone smeared on tiles and silicone coming away from the tiles.

We turn up when we said we would and looks over the damage before anything else. Dust sheets and masking tape go down before we open a single tin. Most visits take around two hours, and we leave the room as we found it.

  1. All the old sealant is cut out and removed.
  2. Next we clean the joint and deal with mould.
  3. We ensure the joint is completely dry.
  4. For a bath, we fill it with water first so the joint is at its widest.
  5. We apply new mould-resistant silicone and tool it to a neat finish, taps included.

A repair normally costs much less than people expect, especially compared with replacing and refitting. Send photos and we will give you the exact figure.

Get a quote

A quote takes minutes to ask for: take one close-up and one wider shot of the bath or shower, include your postcode and send them over. You’ll get a fixed quote, not an estimate.

Around Lerwick

Locally, our jobs take us to homes close to St Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, Grand Hotel and Anderson High School and the streets around them. Well-known places in the area include Gilbert Bain Hospital (under half a mile south) and Shetland Museum (within half a mile north-east). For a walk, there’s Setter Hill and Clickimin Loch.

For landlords and businesses

Rental properties take more wear, and replacing items every time a tenant leaves is expensive. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.

Hotels, guest houses and holiday lets can’t afford rooms out of action for long, so we keep visits short and tidy. We can work around your bookings.

Prices and what affects them

You will not pay by the hour. The price is based on:

  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off
  • Where the damage is and how we get to it
  • Whether we combine several jobs

The price depends on the type and amount of damage, the material and how many jobs we combine into one visit. We give a fixed quote from your pictures, so there are no surprises on the day.

How to get a fixed price

Good photos mean an accurate price. Here’s what we find most useful:

  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • A wider photo showing the whole bath or shower
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • What it’s made of, if you know

Call 0345 017 0787 or use the quote form. With one close-up and one wider picture, we can price the job the same day in most cases.

Aftercare tips

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Ventilate the bathroom well
  • Replace the seal when mould sets in
  • Keep bottles off the joints
  • Wipe the joints dry after use

Keep the room well ventilated, and wipe the joints after use so mould struggles to take hold.

Reseal before water gets in. Gaps or lifting edges mean it needs doing.

What we are called out for in the Shetland Islands

Most reseals are because of black mould. It grows into the silicone, so cleaning cannot get it all out.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Missing sealant behind the taps
  • Water getting behind the bath or tray
  • Old sealant that looks dirty
  • Silicone coming away from the tiles

Honest limits

In fairness, there are a few things a repair won’t fix:

  • Gaps too big for silicone alone
  • Rotten walls or floors behind the bath
  • A flexing bath

Your questions about bath resealing in the Shetland Islands

Will there be a smell?

There can be some smell while we work, so we ventilate the room. It clears as the materials cure.

Can pets and children be at home?

Please keep children and pets out of the room during the visit and until it has cured. The rest of the house is unaffected.

What happens once I’ve sent pictures?

We look at the pictures and reply with a fixed quote and some dates. If we need another angle, we will ask.

How do I stop mould in sealant?

Mostly moisture and poor ventilation. Mould-resistant silicone and good ventilation help.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes: twelve months. If there is a problem with the work in that time, we come back and put it right.

Do you seal over the old sealant?

We always remove the old sealant completely. New silicone won’t bond to old.

Can you quote from pictures?

Nearly always. If photos don’t show enough, we will ask for another angle.
