If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most frequently are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Doing it properly first is usually the cheaper route.

If you do try a kit, read the instructions carefully, make sure the area is clean and completely dry, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it doesn’t work out, we can still repair it properly.

What happens on the day

You don’t need to empty the room. Everything we use comes in the van with us, put protection down and get going once we’ve agreed what we are doing. It typically takes a couple of hours, and you can get on with other things while we are there.

  1. The surrounding area is protected and the joints masked.
  2. We remove the old sealant and every trace of residue.
  3. We clean, treat and dry the joint.
  4. Fresh silicone is applied in a continuous bead.
  5. We smooth the bead, remove the tape and leave it to cure.

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Sinks and worktops

We reseal basins, vanity tops and kitchen worktops, with the joint fully dried first.

Baths

Baths are resealed with water in them, so the joint is at its widest.

Aftercare tips

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Dry the seal after bathing
  • Ventilate the bathroom well
  • Open a window after bathing
  • Replace the seal when mould sets in

Leave the sealant to cure for the time we give you, normally about a day.

Reseal before water gets in. Split or lifting sealant is a sign it’s time.

Why reseal now?

Compared with repairing water damage, resealing is cheap. It’s quick, tidy and protects your home. We charge the same wherever you are, with no extra for Shaw Lands. The job itself decides the price: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Why book with us

  • Most jobs done in one visit
  • No need to remove anything

FAQs for Shaw Lands

Do the materials smell?

Some materials have a smell while they’re applied, which is why we ventilate. It fades as everything cures.

I rent my home. Can I book you?

Yes, but check with your landlord or agent first. Many landlords are happy for a repair to be arranged before the end of a tenancy.

Can I get a quote without a visit?

Yes, almost always. Clear photos let us give you a fixed quote without visiting.

Is my repair covered?

Yes: twelve months. If anything goes wrong with the repair within the year, we return to fix it.

Will it make a mess?

Very little mess: we sheet and mask everything nearby, and we take our waste away with us.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for landlords, agents, builders and businesses as well as homeowners across Barnsley.

How long does silicone take to cure?

We’ll give you the curing time.

Why does mould come back so fast?

Damp is the cause. Run the fan, dry the joints and the new seal stays cleaner for longer.
