Bath repair across DT3: what to expect

Most bath damage, from chips and cracks to rust spots and holes, can be repaired with the bath left exactly where it is. There’s no plumbing to disconnect, your tiles stay as they are, and the repaired area is colour-matched so it blends in. We work on pressed steel enamel, roll-top & freestanding and cast iron enamel, and common reasons people contact us are a hole punched through by something heavy and chips on the rim or sides.

Here’s how a visit typically runs: we arrive on time, sheet and mask the area around the job, do the job and clear up. Allow two to three hours for most chips. Before leaving, we tell you when it can be used and how to look after it.

  1. We protect the bath and the floor around it.
  2. We clean, key and degrease the damage, and any rust is treated.
  3. We fill it, let it set, then sand it flush.
  4. Colour and gloss are matched to the surrounding surface.
  5. We tidy up and tell you when the bath can be used, typically the next day.

Cost

Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. No two jobs are quite the same, so we price each one individually. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Why book with us

  • Everything repaired in place
  • Fixed prices from your pictures
  • One visit for most repairs
  • Honest advice, even when it means no job

How to get a price

For most jobs, photos are all we need to give you a price. Tell us what happened and where you are, and we’ll send back a fixed quote and some dates.

What’s near Chickerell

Our customers here include homes close to Chickerell Primary Academy, Budmouth College and Parish Church of St Mary, among other places. The closest station to Chickerell is Weymouth station, about 2 miles east. Further afield, we also cover the area around Portwey Hospital (2.1 miles south-east) and Wyke Castle (2.1 miles south-east). Not far away are Radipole Lake and Jordan Hill.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, it’s worth having it done properly.

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it will not stop us repairing it. Just mention it when you send photos, as it can add time.

Common problems we fix in DT3

Nearly all the chips we see start with something being dropped: bottles, shower heads, tiles and tools. On steel and cast iron baths, a chip that reaches the metal will start to rust.

The most common problems we are called about are:

  • A chipped rim or side
  • Impact holes in acrylic
  • Damage beneath the taps
  • Rusty patches near the plughole

Repairs by material

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it relies on good support. Repairs to cracks are reinforced from the back.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Keeping it looking good

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. A few tips:

  • Fix dripping taps early to stop staining and limescale
  • Rinse it down after each bath
  • Check that an acrylic bath does not move when you stand in it
  • Stick to mild cleaners and a soft cloth

Look after the repair the same way as the bath: a soft cloth and washing-up liquid is all it needs. Keep scouring pads and gritty cleaners away from it.

Until we visit, a strip of waterproof tape over the damage helps, so water can’t get in. Take it off before we arrive.

Why repair rather than replace?

People frequently assume a cracked or chipped bath has to come out. Normally it does not: a proper repair gives it years more use, without the cost and upheaval of replacing it.

Questions to ask before booking
