About bath repair in E1

Repairing baths is what we do most. A chip by the taps, a crack in the base and a rust spot by the plughole are all repaired in place, normally in one visit. We regularly repair acrylic, pressed steel enamel and cast iron enamel, and people most frequently call us about scratches you can feel with a fingernail and chips under the taps.

On the day, we arrive at the time we’ve agreed, cover the area with dust sheets and masking, and set to work. The job typically takes two to three hours for most chips. We clean up when we’re done and tell you when it’s ready to use.

  1. We start by looking at the damage and confirming the plan with you.
  2. Loose enamel, rust and dirt are removed so the repair can bond.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

A cast iron bath is heavy enough that most people never want to move it. The enamel is the part that wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Pressed steel

Pressed steel is thinner and lighter, with an enamel finish like cast iron. Exposed steel rusts fast, particularly by the plughole, so repair chips early.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

If you’re set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, and give it the full curing time. If it does not work out, we can still repair it properly.

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can make a small mark look better. The trouble is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface isn’t prepared the repair will not last.

When a repair isn’t the answer

We will always be straight with you, so here’s what a repair won’t do:

  • Cracks in acrylic we can’t reach from underneath
  • A bath that flexes because its feet or cradle have failed (that needs fixing first)
  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)

Repairing versus replacing

Many people think a damaged bath means a new one. Typically it does not: a repair keeps the bath in service for years, without the cost and upheaval of replacing it.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What prep work is covered
  • How the room is protected while they work
  • Whether a trained technician does the job
  • Whether the price covers travel

Signs you need bath repair

Baths take more knocks than people expect: bottles, shower heads and razors are dropped every day, and taps and wastes are tightened against the surface. Sooner or later, most baths pick up a chip.

These are the problems we’re asked about most:

  • Rust by the waste and overflow
  • Chips along the edge of the bath
  • Hairline or through cracks in acrylic
  • A hole punched through by something heavy

Your questions about bath repair in E1

How do I book?

A close-up, a wider photo and your postcode. Then we will agree a date.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Doing several items on one visit usually costs less than separate visits. Include pictures of each item.

Do the materials smell?

It depends on the job, but frequently a little. Open windows and an extractor fan help.

Is a repair better than a new one?

Generally, yes. A repair skips the removal, fitting and redecorating. If it is not worth repairing, we will tell you.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

In most cases. The old repair comes out first.

Is my repair covered?

All our work carries a one-year guarantee. We’ll explain what it covers when we quote.

How quickly can you book me in?

That depends on our diary for your area. Send pictures with your postcode and we’ll reply with the earliest dates.
