Bath repair at your home in N17

Repairing baths is what we do most. Chips on the rim, rust around the waste and cracks in acrylic are all repaired in place, normally in a single visit. Typical jobs include impact holes in acrylic and a cracked acrylic bath, in acrylic, roll-top & freestanding and pressed steel enamel.

On the day, we arrive at the time we’ve agreed, cover the area with dust sheets and masking, and set to work. Expect it to take a morning or an afternoon. We tidy up before we leave and tell you when it’s ready to use.

  1. First, we check the damage against your photos and agree the plan.
  2. Loose enamel, rust and dirt are removed so the repair can bond.
  3. We build up the filler in layers, shaping it to the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. The trouble is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface isn’t prepared the repair will not last.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

Repairing versus replacing

A new bath brings a chain of other jobs: the tiles sitting on the rim tend to break, a new panel is often needed, and the plumbing has to be disconnected and refitted. A repair skips all of it.

How to care for the repair

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. A few tips:

  • Give the bath a quick rinse after use
  • Don’t leave razors or cans standing in the bath
  • Fix dripping taps early to stop staining and limescale
  • Avoid scourers, wire wool and gritty cream cleaners

Clean with mild, non-abrasive cleaners and try not to drop heavy bottles on the repair. Get any new chip seen to quickly, before rust sets in.

Don’t leave a chip on a steel or cast iron bath. Once water reaches the metal, rust begins, and a rust spot is a bigger repair than a clean chip.

Repairs by material

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are thick and very strong, finished with fired enamel. A chip down to the iron can rust, but the bath itself lasts for generations, so it’s always worth repairing.

Pressed steel

Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

What we’re called out for in N17

Heavy toiletries are the biggest single cause of chips, with dropped shower heads close behind. Taps and wastes cause problems too: water collects there, so chips nearby rust quickly.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Deep scratches in acrylic
  • Cracks in an acrylic bath
  • Chips caused by builders
  • Rust spots around the plughole

FAQs for N17

Is there any odour?

A little, depending on the job. Open windows and an extractor fan help, and it soon fades.

Is a cracked acrylic bath repairable?

In most cases. We reinforce the crack from behind, then fill and refinish the front, so access behind the panel is important.

Do I need to be at home?

Yes. We need access to the room while we work, at a time that suits you.

Will the repair show?

We aim for a repair you can’t easily find. The rest of the bath’s condition makes a difference.

Something went through my bath. Can it be fixed?

In most cases. Send us a picture of the hole and one from under the bath if you can.

Can pets and children be at home?

Keep pets and children away from the work area on the day, mainly so nothing gets touched before it has cured.

What about rust by the waste?

Yes. We remove the rust and loose enamel, fill the area, then colour-match the finish.
