Repairs by material

Solid surface

Solid surface materials are uniform throughout, so marks can frequently be sanded and refinished.

Laminate

Laminate is a printed surface over a board. We fill the damage and recreate the pattern.

How we handle worktop repair in Athersley

We repair chips, burns and scratches in laminate, stone, quartz, solid surface and wooden worktops, matching the colour and pattern by hand. The worktop stays in place. We regularly repair granite & marble, solid wood and solid surface (such as Corian), and people most frequently call us about chips caused during installation and burns from hot pans.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee, so you are covered after the visit.

Prices and what affects them

Prices start from £95. There is no charge for travel to Athersley. The price depends on:

  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • How much damage there is
  • The material
  • How easy the damage is to reach

The price reflects the work involved, not where you live. The full price is agreed before you book, with no extras added later.

Getting a price from photos

It only takes a minute to photograph the damage. Please include:

  • One picture of the entire worktop
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • Details of any past repairs
  • Natural light rather than flash

You do not need a survey visit. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we’ll reply with a fixed price.

Stone and quartz have to be templated and cut, so replacing a section takes time and money. Repairing it is a few hours’ work. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. The price depends on how much damage there is and what kind, what it’s made of and how many items we do on one visit. You get a fixed price from your pictures, so there are no surprises on the day.

When a repair is not the answer

Some problems need a builder, plumber or fitter rather than us:

  • Water-swollen laminate
  • A worktop that has moved because its support has failed
  • Cracks right through stone that has moved

Not sure? Send photos and we will give you a straight answer.

What happens on the day

The work is clean and fairly quiet, so you can stay at home while we are there. Protection goes down first, then the work takes a few hours, depending on the damage. Before we leave, we explain the curing time and the aftercare.

  1. First, we check the damage and the finish we need to match.
  2. We cut back any burnt or loose material.
  3. The area is filled and shaped.
  4. We recreate the pattern, flecks or grain.
  5. It’s finished to the same sheen and left to cure.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Make sure the area is dry

DIY repairs versus a professional job

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, it’s worth having it done properly.

Keeping it looking good

Most damage we see is avoidable. A few tips:

  • Keep joints and edges dry
  • Oil wooden tops regularly
  • Don’t cut directly on the worktop
  • Don’t knock pans against the edge

Wipe water away from joints and around the sink, especially on laminate and wood.

A burn or chip can get worse with daily use particularly around the sink. An earlier repair is a smaller repair.
