DIY repairs versus a professional job
It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.
It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is generally cheaper.
Bath re-enamelling in Appin, done in place
When a bath is structurally fine but worn out on the surface, re-enamelling is normally the most cost-effective option. There’s no removal, plumbing or tiling involved. We regularly repair Victorian roll-tops, cast iron baths and basins & shower trays, and the jobs we see most are a roll-top that’s seen better days and a bath that stays dull however much you clean it.
All our work is covered by our one-year guarantee, wherever you are in Argyll and Bute.

The process
Visits start with a quick look at the job together, so there are no surprises. Then the area is sheeted and masked and we start. Allow most of the day, and we will keep you posted as we go.
- The room is masked, protected and ventilated.
- The bath is cleaned, degreased and any chips or rust repaired.
- We key the surface and put on a bonding primer.
- Several coats of new finish are sprayed on.
- We leave it to cure, and it’s usually ready the day after.
Before we arrive
- Clear the area around the damage
- Mention if the room is upstairs or in a flat
- Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible
How to get a price
No survey visit is needed: we price from pictures. Use the quote form, or ring 0345 017 0787 to talk it through.
Advice
What bath re-enamelling costs
Prices start from £350. You’ll know the full cost before you book. We take into account:
- Where the damage is and how we get to it
- How much damage there is
- Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
- How many items we do on one visit
No two jobs are quite the same, so we price each one individually. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.
Send pictures for a quote
When you take your photos, a few simple things make all the difference:
- A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
- A close-up of the damage, in focus
- What it’s made of, if you know
- Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
The quickest way to a price is to send two or three photos through our quote form or call us. We will tell you honestly if a repair is the right fix.
Should you replace it?
Replacing a cast iron bath is a big job: they’re heavy, often need breaking up, and a new one isn’t cheap. Resurfacing in place avoids that entirely. Prices start from £350. Set against the cost of replacement, repairing typically costs far less, because there is no removal, plumbing or making good. Your fixed quote shows exactly what’s included.

- Leaks from fittings rather than the bath

Materials and what they mean for the repair
Pressed steel
Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.
Acrylic
We resurface acrylic baths as well, using a system that bonds to acrylic. It must be solid and not flex underfoot for the finish to last.
Looking after it afterwards
So the finish stays in good condition:
- Keep toiletries on a shelf rather than in the bath
- Do not use the bath until it has fully cured
- Do not let dyes or oils sit on the finish
- Never use suction bath mats
Use mild, non-abrasive cleaners, avoid suction bath mats, and keep bottles and razors off the surface.
Rust spots on a worn bath get worse with time, and each one adds to the preparation. It’s simpler to resurface before they spread.
Appin questions
Can you re-enamel a roll-top bath?
Yes, roll-tops are a big part of our work. The inside is resurfaced, and we can refinish the outside as well.
Will the new finish last?
A well-prepared finish lasts a long time if it’s looked after. Avoid abrasive cleaners and suction mats.
Will you leave a mess?
Very little mess: we sheet and mask everything nearby, and we leave the room clean.
Do I need to be at home?
Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time that suits you.
Will there be a smell?
There can be some smell while we work, so we ventilate the room. It fades as everything cures.
Is it safe with children and pets around?
Just keep them out of the work area. We will tell you when the room can be used again.
What areas do you cover?
We work UK-wide, and that includes Appin. Our prices are the same everywhere.
How long does re-enamelling take?
Usually one day, with the bath ready the day after. A badly pitted bath can need a second day.
