Repair or replace: which is better?

Getting a cast iron bath out is hard work: they’re heavy, frequently need breaking up, and a new one is not cheap. Re-enamelling avoids all of it. Prices start from £350. The price depends on how much damage there is and what kind, the material and how many items we do on one visit. You get a fixed quote from your photos, so you know the cost before you book.

DIY kit or professional repair?

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is usually the cheaper route.

If you do try a kit, read the instructions carefully and work on a clean, dry surface, and give it the full curing time. If it does not work out, we can still repair it properly.

Do you need bath re-enamelling in Friar's Hill?

Enamel wears gradually. Years of cleaning, hard water and hot baths wear the gloss away, starting where water runs and sits.

Common reasons people in Friar's Hill contact us include:

  • Chips and rust in more than one place
  • An old resurfacing that is failing
  • Enamel that is lost its shine and feels rough
  • A coloured bath you want in white

Before you book anyone

  • How your room will be protected
  • Whether they match the colour on site
  • Whether a trained technician does the job

Your questions about bath re-enamelling in Friar's Hill

Can I get a quote without a visit?

Generally, yes. A close-up and a wider photo are enough to give a fixed price.

Are you a vetted contractor?

We’re accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.

How long will the bath be out of use?

Most baths are done in a day and can be used the day after. We will confirm timings when we quote.

Do I have to be there?

Yes. We need access to the room while we work, at a time we agree with you.

Is there any odour?

Some materials have a smell while they’re applied, which is why we ventilate. It clears as the materials cure.

It’s been repaired before. Can you still fix it?

In most cases. We remove the old repair before doing a new one, so mention it when you send pictures.

Will it make a mess?

We protect the room with dust sheets and masking first, and tidy up before we leave.

What happens after I send pictures?

You will get a fixed quote back. There is no obligation to book.

Keeping it looking good

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. These habits help:

  • Don’t leave a chip unrepaired
  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Use washing-up liquid and a soft cloth
  • Rinse off hair dye, oils and bath bombs straight away

Wait for the curing time we give you before the first bath. Then, gentle cleaning with a soft cloth is enough.

Leave a peeling coating alone. Water gets under it and the damage spreads, so have it stripped and resurfaced.

Landlords, agents and businesses in Friar's Hill

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Just send photos, the address and how to get access and we will arrange it.

Rented homes see more wear and tear, and replacing items every time a tenant leaves is expensive. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.

How it works

When we visit, we arrive at the time we have agreed, cover the area with dust sheets and masking, and set to work. The job typically takes the best part of a day. We clean up when we are done and tell you when it’s ready to use.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. We remove the old silicone and deep clean the bath.
  3. We repair chips, rust spots and pitting.
  4. We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
  5. Several coats of finish are sprayed on, then it cures until the day after.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Have a window or extractor fan available
  • Let us know if it has been repaired before
  • Clear toiletries, mats and anything else from around the area

How to get a price

Send us photos of the damage and a wider shot of the entire item, with your TN35 postcode, and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Advice

What your bath is made of matters

Acrylic

Acrylic feels warm and is light, but it relies on good support. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.

When a repair isn’t the answer

We will not take on work that will not last, so here’s what a repair can’t put right:

  • Problems we cannot see until an old finish comes off
  • A poorly supported acrylic bath, until it’s firmed up
  • A bath that is rusted through

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think.
