Bath re-enamelling in Hammer without replacing anything
Many of the baths we re-enamel are period roll-tops, which are heavy, hard to move and costly to replace. Doing them in place keeps an original feature. We regularly repair acrylic baths, pressed steel baths and basins & shower trays, and the jobs we see most are a period or roll-top bath worth keeping and chips and rust in more than one place.
Big or small, you get the same one-year guarantee.

Can I fix it myself?
It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and then the old filler has to be removed first.
The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, and the work is guaranteed.
When a repair is not the answer
A few problems are outside what a surface repair can do:
- Damage hidden under a previous coating, until it’s stripped back
- An acrylic bath that flexes badly underfoot
- A cast iron or steel bath that is cracked right through
If in doubt, send pictures and we will say what we think.
What we work on
- Pressed steel baths
- Cast iron baths
- Acrylic baths
- Basins & shower trays
- Victorian roll-tops
What we do, step by step
Nothing needs to be moved out of the room beforehand. We bring everything we need with us, put protection down and start once you’re happy with the plan. Most jobs take a full day, and you’re welcome to carry on with your day while we work.
- We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
- We remove the old silicone and deep clean the bath.
- We repair chips, rust spots and pitting.
- We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
- The new finish is sprayed on in several coats and left to cure.
How to prepare
- Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive
- Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
- Keep pets and children out of the room while we work

What your bath is made of matters
Cast iron
Cast iron baths are the classic candidate for re-enamelling. The body lasts for generations; only the enamel wears, so a new finish makes them look new again.
Roll-top and period baths
We can resurface a roll-top inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.
When to call us in Hammer
Enamel’s shine is only skin deep, and every scrub with an abrasive cleaner takes a little away. After years of use, the surface becomes porous and stains easily.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- An outdated colour you’d like to change
- Thin, worn enamel in places
- Chips and rust in more than one place
- Stains that will not shift
What to look for in a quote
- How long it needs to cure
- The length of the guarantee and what it covers
- Whether the colour is mixed to match
- If travel is included in the price

Questions from Hammer
I rent my home. Can I book you?
Yes, though it’s best to check with your landlord first. Many landlords are happy for a repair to be arranged before the end of a tenancy.
It’s been repaired before. Can you still fix it?
Yes, regularly. Removing the old work can add time, and that is in the quote.
Can a failed resurfacing be redone?
In most cases. The old coating comes off before we resurface it. Tell us about it when you ask for a quote.
Does the bath have to be removed?
Not at all. Everything is done in your bathroom, with the room protected and ventilated.
What happens once I’ve sent photos?
You get a fixed quote and available dates. If anything’s unclear, we will ask for another photo.
Is repairing better than replacing?
Typically, when the rest is in good condition. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. If replacing would be better, we will say so.
Do the materials smell?
There can be some smell while we work. It clears as the materials cure.
Will there be fumes?
Some odour is normal while we spray, which is why we ventilate the bathroom. It fades as the coating cures.
Looking after it afterwards
Once the work has cured, treat it gently:
- Store bottles off the bath
- Use washing-up liquid and a soft cloth
- Dry the bath after use to stop limescale
- Fix dripping taps quickly
Rinse away dyes, oils and bath bombs straight after use, because they can mark the finish. Repair dripping taps promptly.
Avoid scrubbing a dull bath with abrasive cleaners. It just wears the enamel further and makes resurfacing more work.
For landlords and businesses
Hotels, guest houses and holiday lets can’t afford rooms out of action for long, so we keep visits short and tidy. We will fit around changeovers where we can.
For developers and builders, we fix damage before handover, saving last-minute replacements. We can visit several plots in one trip to keep costs down.
Repairing versus replacing in Hammer
If you like your bathroom but not your bath’s surface, re-enamelling is the least disruptive fix. Tiles, panels and taps stay put. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. There are no surprise extras on the day. The price we quote from your pictures is the price you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.
