About our bath re-enamelling in Hele

Resurfacing renews the whole surface of the bath without taking anything out. It’s the answer when the entire bath is tired rather than one spot. Whether it’s a bath in a colour that no longer suits and lots of chips and rust spots, we can generally put it right.

All of our repairs are guaranteed for twelve months. If something goes wrong with the work, we come back.

Common problems we fix in Hele

The gloss on enamel is thin, and every scrub with an abrasive cleaner takes a little away. After years of use, the surface becomes porous and stains easily.

The most common problems we are called about are:

  • Stains that won’t shift
  • Lots of chips and rust spots
  • An original cast iron bath that needs restoring
  • A bath in a colour that no longer suits

Questions to ask before you book

  • How long it needs to cure
  • Whether the colour is mixed to match
  • What preparation is included
  • Whether the price is fixed and includes VAT

How to look after the repair

Good habits make a big difference to how long a repair lasts:

  • Get any chip repaired quickly
  • Dry the bath after use to stop limescale
  • Stick to gentle, non-abrasive cleaners
  • Fix dripping taps quickly

Dry the bath after use if possible, especially in hard water areas, and rinse off any bath products.

If a previous coating is starting to peel, do not pick at it. Moisture gets underneath and makes it worse, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

How the visit works

Here’s how a visit normally runs: we arrive on time, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and tidy away. Allow the best part of a day from start to finish. Before we go, we will explain how long to leave it and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. First we protect the bathroom and set up ventilation.
  2. We clean and degrease the bath and repair any chips or rust.
  3. We key the surface and put on a bonding primer.
  4. We spray several coats of new enamel finish.
  5. We leave it to cure, and it’s normally ready the day after.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions or tricky access
  • Ensure the room can be ventilated

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Cast iron

Re-enamelling suits cast iron baths perfectly. They’re built to last, and only the surface wears, so a new finish makes them look new again.

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it relies on good support. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

Repair or replace: which is better?

For a sound bath, resurfacing costs far less than replacement, once you add removal, plumbing, tiling and decorating to the price of a new bath. It’s also far quicker. Prices start from £350. No two jobs are quite the same, so each one is priced on its own. The size and type of damage, the material and access all make a difference, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Why us?

  • No need to remove anything
  • We leave the room as we found it
  • A year’s guarantee on all work
  • Repair technicians who travel to you, UK-wide

Should I try a DIY kit first?

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, then guarantee it for a year.

If you’re set on a kit, follow its instructions closely and work on a clean, dry surface, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it doesn’t work out, we can still repair it properly.

When we would advise against a repair

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • A bath that is rusted through
  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber
  • Problems we can’t see until an old finish comes off

If in doubt, send pictures and we will say what we think before you book.

What we work on

  • Basins & shower trays
  • Acrylic baths
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Cast iron baths
  • Victorian roll-tops

Work for landlords and builders

We work for landlords, letting agents and housing providers in Hele as well as homeowners. Repairing between tenancies keeps void periods short, and it usually costs far less than a refit.

Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs in Devon and across the UK. Repairing in place avoids the disruption of a replacement, which is easier on the people living there.

Hele questions

Which areas do you work in?

The whole UK, including all of Devon. Just include your postcode and we’ll offer you dates.

Can you quote from pictures?

Yes, almost always. Clear photos let us give you a fixed quote without visiting.

Are you accredited?

We hold CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile accreditations.

How durable is a resurfaced bath?

That depends on preparation and how the bath is treated. Properly prepared and looked after, it lasts well, and our work is guaranteed for a year.

Will there be a smell?

There can be some smell while we work, so we ventilate the room. It clears as the materials cure.

What happens if you find more damage?

The price is fixed for what the pictures show. Anything extra is discussed before we begin.

Will there be fumes?

Some odour is normal while we spray, so we ventilate the room. It fades as the coating cures.

Can you repair something that is been repaired before?

Yes, regularly. It can add a little time, which we include in the quote.
