How we handle bath re-enamelling in Millbrook

If your bath is sound but looks tired, re-enamelling is usually the most cost-effective option. It avoids removal, plumbing and re-tiling. If you are dealing with brown or grey marks that don’t clean off and an outdated colour you’d like to change, we can help, on Victorian roll-tops, cast iron baths and basins & shower trays alike.

You are covered for a year from the day of the repair. If anything isn’t right, ring us and we’ll sort it.

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Pressed steel

Steel baths re-enamel well, once any rust has been treated. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we check it carefully.

Cast iron

A cast iron bath is heavy enough that most people never want to move it. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that is the part we put right.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can make a small mark look better. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler frequently lifts.

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that is fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it will not stop us repairing it. Just mention it when you send photos, as it can add time.

Common problems we fix in Millbrook

The gloss on enamel is thin, and abrasive cleaning slowly wears it away. Eventually the surface turns porous and stains.

These are the problems we are asked about most:

  • A coating lifting around the plughole
  • A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
  • A coloured bath you want in white
  • Brown or grey marks that don’t clean off

Millbrook questions

What happens once I’ve sent photos?

We look at the photos and reply with a fixed price and some dates. If we need another angle, we’ll ask.

Is a repair better than a new one?

Typically, if the item is otherwise sound. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. We will tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Generally, yes. Let us know what was used before and we’ll plan for it.

Can you do the outside of a roll-top?

Yes, roll-tops are a big part of our work. The inside is resurfaced, and we can refinish the outside as well.

Will the price change on the day?

The price is fixed for what the photos show. Anything extra is discussed before we begin.

Can you price it without visiting?

In nearly every case. If photos don’t show enough, we’ll ask for another angle.

Does re-enamelling smell?

Yes, while we are applying the finish. We set up ventilation and the smell fades as it cures.

Will there be a smell?

There may be a mild smell during the work, which fades afterwards.

What we do, step by step

Nothing needs to be moved out of the room. We bring everything we need with us, lay protective sheets and start once you are happy with the plan. Most jobs take a full day, and you can get on with other things while we’re there.

  1. The bathroom is protected and ventilation set up.
  2. Old sealant is cut out and the bath is deep cleaned.
  3. Chips, rust and pitting are repaired.
  4. The surface is keyed and primed for the new finish.
  5. The new finish is sprayed on in several coats and left to cure until the next day.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets and children out of the room while we work
  • Mention any parking restrictions or tricky access
  • Let the surface dry out before the visit

How to get a price

There is no need for us to visit first. Nearly every job can be priced from pictures: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we’ll reply with a fixed price.

What bath re-enamelling costs

Resurfacing from £350. There is no charge for travel to Millbrook. The price depends on:

  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • Where the damage is and how we get to it
  • How much damage there is
  • Doing more than one item at once

The price depends on how much damage there is and what kind, the material and how many items we do on one visit. You get a fixed quote from your photos, so there are no surprises on the day.

Quotes from your photos

When you take your photos, a few simple things make all the difference:

  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • One picture of the whole bath
  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • Something in shot to show the size

We price from pictures so you don’t have to wait in for a survey. Use the quote form, or ring 0345 017 0787 to talk it through.

What a repair can’t fix

Some jobs are not right for a repair, including:

  • A cast iron or steel bath that is cracked right through
  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber
  • Problems we cannot see until an old finish comes off

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think before booking.

Work for landlords and builders

If you manage property in Millbrook, we will quote for several properties at once. Just send pictures for each address and we will price them together.

Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs in Central Bedfordshire and across the UK. A repair avoids taking out and refitting, which is easier on the people living there.

Why repair rather than replace?

Getting a cast iron bath out is hard work: it’s very heavy, may need breaking up, and the replacement can be costly. Re-enamelling avoids all of it. Prices start from £350. Every job is a little different, so we price each one individually. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.
