Materials and what they mean for the repair
Cast iron
A cast iron bath is heavy enough that most people never want to move it. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that is the part we put right.
Roll-top and period baths
Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.
What happens on the day
Expect a friendly, tidy visit. We confirm the time with you beforehand, protect the area, then carry out the work, which normally takes the best part of a day. If we find something your pictures didn’t show, we will explain it before carrying on.
- We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
- Old sealant is cut out and the bath is deep cleaned.
- Chips, rust and pitting are repaired.
- The surface is keyed and primed for the new finish.
- The new finish is sprayed on in several coats and left to cure.
How to prepare
- Tell us about parking, stairs or access
- Clear the area around the damage
- Keep a parking space free if you can

Related advice
Can I fix it myself?
Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most frequently are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Doing it properly first is usually the cheaper route.
We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and then the old filler has to be removed first.
Monk's Hill: your questions answered
How long does re-enamelling take?
One day for most baths, ready the following day. We give you timings with the quote.
Will the price change on the day?
It’s rare, but if it happens we talk to you first. You decide whether to go ahead.
Will there be a smell?
Expect a mild smell while we are working, which fades afterwards.
Do you hold any accreditations?
Yes. Our accreditations include CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor. See our accreditations page for the full list.
Can you quote from photos?
Nearly always. If photos do not show enough, we’ll ask for another angle.
Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?
Typically, when the rest is in good condition. A repair avoids removal and making good. We’ll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.
How quickly can you book me in?
We will give you dates with your quote. If it’s urgent, say so and we will do what we can.
Will the new finish last?
Care for it and it lasts. Gentle cleaning, no suction mats.

Repair or replace: which is better?
There are times replacing is better: a cracked-through bath, a change of size or shape, or a full refit. Otherwise, resurfacing generally wins. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. We do not add extras on the day. What we quote from your photos is what you pay, and if the damage turns out to be different, we discuss it before starting.

Looking after it afterwards
How the surface is treated afterwards matters. Here’s what we suggest:
- Leave the bath for the full curing time before using it
- Have chips seen to early
- Store bottles off the bath
- Stick to gentle, non-abrasive cleaners
Dry the bath after use if possible, particularly with hard water, and rinse off any bath products.
The longer worn enamel is left, the rougher it gets, and any rust spreads underneath. Resurfacing sooner means less repair work first.
Prices and what affects them
Prices start from £350. Quotes are free and the price is fixed. What we look at:
- What the surface is made of
- Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
- Unusual colours or finishes
- What kind of damage it is
A repair usually costs much less than people expect, particularly next to the cost of replacement. Send pictures and we’ll give you the exact figure.
How to get a fixed quote
Almost every job we do is priced from pictures. This is what to send:
- Any details about the material
- A close-up of the damage, in focus
- Any earlier repairs or coatings
- One picture of the entire bath
Getting a price is easy: snap the damage close up and then the entire item, send them over with your postcode, and you will get a fixed price back. There’s no charge for the quote and no obligation.
