How we handle bath re-enamelling in Presthope

We clean, repair and prime the bath before spraying the new finish. Most of the work, and most of the durability, is in the preparation, so we don’t cut corners on it. We work on acrylic baths, pressed steel baths and cast iron baths, and people most frequently call us about an original cast iron bath that needs restoring and an old resurfacing that’s failing.

Every job is backed for twelve months. We return to put right any problem with the work.

Why repair rather than replace?

If you like your bathroom but not your bath’s surface, resurfacing is the simplest answer. Tiles, panels and taps stay put. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. A few things move the price: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Send photos and you’ll get a fixed figure.

Why Presthope clients choose us

  • Accredited with CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor
  • Fixed prices from your photos
  • Honest advice, even when it means no job
  • No need to remove anything

Honest limits

A repair is not always the answer, and we will tell you before we start. Repairs will not solve:

  • Steel that has corroded right through
  • A poorly supported acrylic bath, until it’s firmed up
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)

Not sure? Send pictures and we will give you a straight answer.

What we work on

  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Cast iron baths
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Acrylic baths
  • Pressed steel baths

Can I fix it myself?

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is usually cheaper.

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, then guarantee it for a year.

Repairs by material

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are the classic candidate for re-enamelling. They’re built to last, and only the surface wears, so resurfacing gives them a new life.

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it needs firm support underneath. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

Keeping it looking good

A little care keeps the finish looking good. We recommend:

  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Don’t leave bottles, razors or sponges standing on the surface
  • Do not use the bath until it has fully cured
  • Stick to gentle, non-abrasive cleaners

Dry the bath after use if possible, especially in hard water areas, and rinse off any bath products.

On a worn bath, rust spots keep spreading. Resurfacing before they spread keeps it simpler.

What affects the price in Presthope

Prices start from £350. We give every job a fixed price from pictures. This is what makes a difference:

  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • Doing more than one item at once
  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first

Every job is a little different, so each one is priced on its own. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Getting a price from photos

You can generally get a fixed quote without us visiting. To help us price it:

  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
  • Something in shot to show the size

There is no need for us to visit first. Nearly every job can be priced from photos: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we’ll come back to you with a fixed figure.

What happens on the day

You do not need to empty the room beforehand. We bring everything we need with us, put protection down and get going once we’ve agreed what we’re doing. It generally takes a full day, and you are welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. First we look the bath over and confirm the finish.
  2. Taps, tiles and the floor are masked off.
  3. The bath is degreased, repaired and keyed.
  4. Primer and finish coats are applied.
  5. We remove the masking, tidy up and give you the curing time.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking restrictions or tricky access
  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Point us to the nearest place to park

Getting a price

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: take one close-up and one wider shot of the bath, include your postcode and send them over. What comes back is a fixed price, not a guess.

Advice

Common questions in Presthope

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Yes, regularly. Removing the old work can add time, and that’s in the quote.

Can you repair several things at once?

Yes. Doing several items on one visit usually costs less than separate visits. Send pictures of everything you’d like done.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

In most cases, yes. Replacement brings removal, refitting and making good, which a repair avoids. We will be honest if it’s not worth it.

Can I get a quote without a visit?

Nearly always. If pictures do not show enough, we’ll ask for another angle.

Which areas do you work in?

Everywhere in the UK, Presthope included. Travel is included in the price.

How do I book?

A close-up, a wider photo and your postcode. After that, we just agree a date.

Does someone need to be in?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time that suits you.

Do you resurface freestanding baths?

Yes. Inside and out.
