About our bath re-enamelling in Smallrice

Most baths are re-enamelled in a day. Nothing is disconnected or removed. Typical jobs include a bath that stays dull however much you clean it and stains that won’t shift, across pressed steel baths, Victorian roll-tops and acrylic baths.

Every job is backed for twelve months. If something goes wrong with the work, we come back.

What happens on the day

A typical visit goes like this: we arrive on time, protect everything around the work area, do the job and clear up. Allow a full day. Before we go, we will explain how long to leave it and how to care for it.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. Old sealant is cut out and the bath is deep cleaned.
  3. We repair chips, rust spots and pitting.
  4. We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
  5. Several coats of finish are sprayed on, then it cures.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let the surface dry out before the visit
  • Keep pets and children out of the room while we work
  • Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible

Repairs by material

Acrylic

Acrylic baths can be resurfaced too, with a coating system suited to acrylic. The bath needs to be firm and well supported for the finish to last.

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.

Aftercare tips

Looking after the surface is easy:

  • Dry the bath after use to stop limescale
  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Keep suction mats out of the bath
  • Do not leave bottles, razors or sponges standing on the surface

Wait for the curing time we give you before the first bath. Then, gentle cleaning with a soft cloth is enough.

Leave a peeling coating alone. Water gets under it and the damage spreads, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

Repairing versus replacing in Smallrice

A refit takes several trades and several days. Resurfacing is one technician, normally in a day, and the bath can be used the day after. Prices start from £350. We charge the same wherever you are, so there is no premium for Smallrice. What changes the price is the job itself: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface isn’t prepared the repair will not last.

Work for landlords and builders

Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs. Repairing in place avoids the disruption of a replacement, which matters when someone is living in the home.

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Just send photos, the address and how to get access.

Do you need bath re-enamelling in Smallrice?

In hard water areas, limescale and the cleaning it needs wear enamel faster, and gritty cleaners are the worst culprits.

You may need us if you’ve spotted:

  • Stains that won’t shift
  • Chips and rust in more than one place
  • Worn patches where water runs and sits
  • A bath that stays dull however much you clean it

What your quote should include

  • Whether a trained technician does the job
  • What happens if they find more damage
  • Is the price fixed, and does it include VAT?
  • What preparation is included

10 questions to ask before booking

What we can’t put right

Before booking, it’s worth knowing the limits:

  • Holes rusted through the metal
  • Damage hidden under a previous coating, until it’s stripped back
  • Leaking taps or wastes (a plumber’s job)

Not sure? Send pictures and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Smallrice: your questions answered

Is there a call-out fee?

We do not add a call-out fee. The fixed price covers the visit and the work.

Can I add another job to the visit?

Yes. Combining jobs on one visit brings the cost down. Include pictures of each item.

Do I have to be there?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time that suits you.

Will you leave a mess?

Very little mess: we sheet and mask everything nearby, and we take our waste away with us.

Will the bath be moved?

No. We resurface it in place, so the tiles and taps stay put.

Do you hold any accreditations?

We are accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.

Can you redo someone else’s repair?

Normally, yes. We remove the old repair before doing a new one, so let us know about it.

Can you price it without visiting?

Nearly always. If photos don’t show enough, we will ask for another angle.
