Bath re-enamelling at your home in The Herberts
Resurfacing renews the whole surface of the bath without a refit. It suits baths that are dull, stained, rough or chipped all over. We regularly repair basins & shower trays, cast iron baths and pressed steel baths, and the jobs we see most are brown or grey marks that don’t clean off and a peeling or bubbling previous coating.
We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee, so you’re not left on your own once we have gone.

Aftercare tips
It’s all simple stuff:
- Respect the curing time we give you
- Have chips seen to early
- Rinse off hair dye, oils and bath bombs straight away
- Stick to gentle, non-abrasive cleaners
The first few days matter most: give it the full curing time, then clean it gently. After that, no abrasives and no suction mats.
Avoid scrubbing a dull bath with abrasive cleaners. It just wears the enamel further and makes resurfacing more work.
What we cannot put right
Honesty matters more than a booking, so here’s what a repair cannot fix:
- A metal bath with a through crack
- Anything hidden under an old coating, until we remove it
- Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber
If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think before you book.
What we work on
- Victorian roll-tops
- Basins & shower trays
- Pressed steel baths
- Acrylic baths
- Cast iron baths
Common problems we fix in The Herberts
Often the bath has just had decades of use. The body of the bath is generally perfectly sound.
Typical reasons for a call-out include:
- A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
- Staining under the taps and around the waste
- A bath that stays dull however much you clean it
- Chips and rust in more than one place
Questions to ask before you book
- How soon you can use it again
- Whether a trained technician does the job
- Whether there are any call-out or travel charges
- Whether the price is fixed and includes VAT
What we do, step by step
A typical visit goes like this: we arrive at the agreed slot, sheet and mask the area around the job, carry out the work and clear up. Plan for a full day from start to finish. Before leaving, we tell you how long to leave it and what to avoid for the first few days.
- The room is masked, protected and ventilated.
- Next we degrease the bath and fix chips and rust spots.
- The surface is prepared and a bonding primer applied.
- Several coats of new finish are sprayed on.
- Once cured, normally by the following day, the bath is ready.
How to prepare
- Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive
- Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
- Mention if the room is upstairs or in a flat

Related advice
Materials and what they mean for the repair
Acrylic
Acrylic baths can be resurfaced too, with a coating system suited to acrylic. It must be solid and not flex underfoot for the finish to last.
Roll-top and period baths
Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.
Should I try a DIY kit first?
The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, and the work is guaranteed.
A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, it’s worth having it done properly.
Should you replace it?
Getting a cast iron bath out is hard work: they’re heavy, frequently need breaking up, and a new one isn’t cheap. Resurfacing in place avoids that entirely. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. Rather than charging by the hour, we fix the price before we start. Damage, material and access decide it, and doing several items at once reduces it.
