Bath re-enamelling in Unthank without replacing anything
Cast iron and steel baths are ideal for re-enamelling, and acrylic baths can be resurfaced too. The result is a smooth, even, glossy finish. We regularly repair cast iron baths, Victorian roll-tops and acrylic baths, and people most often call us about a peeling or bubbling previous coating and several chips and rust patches.
You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Unthank as everywhere else we work.

Prices and what affects them
Prices start from £350. Prices are worked out job by job. What matters most is:
- Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off
- What the surface is made of
- Whether we combine several jobs
- Access to the area
What it costs depends on how much damage there is and what kind, what it’s made of and how many items we do on one visit. You get a fixed price from your pictures, so you know the cost before you book.
Getting a price from photos
Phone photos are fine, there’s no need for anything special. Make sure they show:
- A coin beside the damage so we can judge size
- What it’s made of, if you know
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- A clear, close picture of the problem area
You do not need a survey visit. Nearly every job can be priced from pictures: send a close-up, a wider shot and your postcode, and we’ll come back to you with a fixed figure.

Different materials, different repairs
Cast iron
Cast iron baths are the classic candidate for re-enamelling. They’re built to last, and only the surface wears, so a new finish makes them look new again.
Pressed steel
Pressed steel baths take a new finish well, as long as any rust is dealt with first. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we pay close attention there.
Repair or replace: which is better?
Replacing a bath can take several days across several trades. Resurfacing takes one technician and typically a day, and the bath is usable the day after. Prices start from £350. We don’t add extras on the day. The price we quote from your pictures is the price you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

How the visit works
Nothing needs to be moved out of the room beforehand. We bring everything we need with us, lay protective sheets and start once you’re happy with the plan. It typically takes most of the day, and you are welcome to carry on with your day while we work.
- We mask and protect the room and ventilate it.
- We clean and degrease the bath and repair any chips or rust.
- We prepare the surface and apply a bonding primer.
- Several coats of new finish are sprayed on.
- The bath is left to cure and can usually be used the next day.
How to prepare
- Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible
- Let the surface dry out before the visit
- Tell us about parking, stairs or access

Unthank questions
Is it messy?
We protect the room with dust sheets and masking first, and we clean up when we’ve finished.
What happens next?
We come back with a fixed quote, plus dates. You’re under no obligation.
Can tenants book a repair?
We’re happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Just ensure the landlord agrees.
Does re-enamelling smell?
Yes, while we’re applying the finish. Ventilation keeps it down, and it fades as the finish cures.
Will the price change on the day?
The price is fixed for what the photos show. If there’s more, we will tell you before starting.
Are you a vetted contractor?
We are accredited with CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile.
Do you need to take the bath out?
No. We resurface it in place, so nothing else is disturbed.
How soon can you come?
We will give you dates with your quote. If it’s urgent, say so and we will do what we can.
Common problems we fix in Unthank
The gloss on enamel is thin, and abrasive cleaning slowly wears it away. After years of use, the surface becomes porous and stains easily.
Typical reasons for a call-out include:
- A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
- Staining under the taps and around the waste
- A coating lifting around the plughole
- A dull, rough surface that will not come clean
Comparing quotes

- Whether a trained technician does the job
- Aftercare advice
Aftercare tips
It’s all simple stuff:
- A quick wipe after use keeps limescale away
- Respect the curing time we give you
- Rinse off hair dye, oils and bath bombs immediately
- Store bottles off the bath
The first few days matter most: give it the full curing time, then clean it gently. From then on, avoid abrasives and suction mats.
Do not try to scrub a worn bath back to shine. It just wears the enamel further.
DIY repairs versus a professional job
A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, it’s worth having it done properly.
If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it will not stop us repairing it. Just mention it when you send photos, as it can add time.
When we’d advise against a repair
We will not take on work that won’t last, so here’s what a repair can’t put right:
- A cast iron or steel bath that is cracked right through
- Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber
- Problems we can’t see until an old finish comes off
If in doubt, send photos and we’ll say what we think.
Materials we repair
