Should you replace it?

People often assume a cracked or chipped bath has to come out. Normally it does not: a repair keeps the bath in service for years, and costs far less than the disruption of a replacement. Prices start from £95. A repair generally costs much less than people expect, particularly next to the cost of replacement. Photos let us give you the exact figure.

What happens on the day

Here’s how a visit generally runs: we arrive at the agreed slot, protect everything around the work area, do the job and clear up. Allow two to three hours for most chips. Before leaving, we tell you when it can be used and what to avoid for the first few days.

  1. We start by cleaning the damage and taking out loose enamel and rust.
  2. The chip or crack is filled, then sanded level with the bath.
  3. We tint the finish on the day to suit your bath’s shade of white or colour.
  4. We build up the finish and polish it into the surrounding enamel.
  5. Once it has cured, normally by the day after, the bath is ready to use.

How to prepare

  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Clear the area around the damage
  • Keep a parking space free if you can

Advice

How to care for the repair

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Rinse it down after each bath
  • Don’t scrub with anything abrasive
  • Don’t leave a fresh chip for long
  • Make sure an acrylic bath is firm underfoot

Clean with mild, non-abrasive cleaners and try not to drop heavy bottles on the repair. Get any new chip seen to quickly, before rust can start.

Tape over a fresh chip or crack until it’s repaired, so water can’t get in. Take it off before we arrive.

Repairs by material

Composite and resin

Stone resin and composite baths are heavy and solid, and frequently freestanding. Chips and scratches are filled and matched, just like other baths.

Acrylic

Acrylic feels warm and is light, but it relies on good support. Repairs to cracks are reinforced from the back.

Prices and what affects them

Repairs from £95. You will know the full cost before booking. We take into account:

  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • What the surface is made of
  • How much damage there is

A few things move the price: the amount of damage, the material, access to the area, and how many jobs we do in one trip. Send pictures and you will get a fixed figure.

Send pictures for a quote

Two or three clear pictures are typically enough. Try to include:

  • Any earlier repairs or coatings
  • Something in shot to show the size
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

You don’t need a survey visit. Nearly every job can be priced from pictures: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will come back to you with a fixed figure.

What we cannot put right

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • Rust that has eaten right through a steel bath
  • A bath that moves underfoot, until its support is fixed
  • Acrylic cracks with no access behind them

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think.
