Bath repair for Longbarn homes

Should I try a DIY kit first?

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Doing it properly first is normally the cheaper route.

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, and the work is guaranteed.

Bath repair in Longbarn, done in place

Small damage on a bath is worth repairing early. On steel and cast iron, exposed metal starts to rust, while cracks in acrylic grow each time the bath moves. Repairing it stops the damage getting worse. Whether it’s holes from dropped items and a chipped rim or side, we can help, on cast iron enamel, pressed steel enamel and roll-top & freestanding alike.

You’re covered after we leave: our one-year guarantee applies to every job, and we will explain exactly what it covers when we quote.

What bath repair costs

Repairs from £95. Each job gets its own fixed price. These are the things that affect it:

  • How much damage there is
  • What kind of damage it is
  • Doing more than one item at once
  • How hard the colour is to match

There are no surprise extras on the day. What we quote from your pictures is what you pay, and if the damage turns out to be different, we discuss it before starting.

Getting a price from pictures

It only takes a minute to photograph the damage. Try to send:

  • A photo taken from further back
  • Natural light rather than flash
  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings

There is no need for us to visit first. Nearly every job can be priced from pictures: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will reply with a fixed quote.

How to look after the repair

Nothing complicated is needed, just a few sensible habits:

  • Keep abrasive pads and gritty cleaners away from the bath
  • Clean with warm water and a mild detergent
  • Store metal items away from the bath
  • Rinse it down after each bath

In the first few days, avoid putting weight or bottles on the repair. After that, clean it as you would the rest of the bath without abrasive products.

Rust under enamel spreads surprisingly quickly. Left for months, a small chip can grow into a large rust patch, so it pays to deal with it early.

Why repair rather than replace?

Many people think a damaged bath means a new one. Generally it doesn’t: a proper repair gives it years more use, and costs far less than the disruption of a replacement. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. No two jobs are quite the same, so we price each one individually. What’s damaged, how badly and how easy it is to reach all make a difference, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

How it works

Arrival times are agreed in advance, so you are not left guessing. On site, it takes two to three hours for most chips for most jobs. We leave the room clean.

  1. We start by looking at the damage and confirming the plan with you.
  2. Loose enamel, rust and dirt are removed so the repair can bond.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have somewhere for us to park nearby if possible
  • Open a window if you can
  • Tell us about any previous repairs or coatings

Related advice

Work for landlords and builders

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Just send pictures, the address and how to get access and we’ll handle the rest.

Rental properties take more wear, and replacing items every time a tenant leaves is expensive. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.

Questions from Longbarn

What happens after I send photos?

We look at the pictures and reply with a fixed quote and some dates. If we need another angle, we’ll ask.

Will I be able to see the repair?

The goal is a repair that blends in. How well it disappears depends on the condition of the rest of the bath.

Do you hold any accreditations?

Yes, including CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor. See our accreditations page for the full list.

Do you work in Longbarn?

Yes. We work across the UK and come to Longbarn. Send pictures and we will quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

In most cases, yes. Replacement brings removal, refitting and making good, which a repair avoids. If it isn’t worth repairing, we’ll tell you.

Can you repair something that’s been repaired before?

Most of the time. Let us know what was used before and we will plan for it.

Can you repair a failed DIY repair?

Yes. We remove the old filler and start again. Mention it when you send pictures.

Is it OK to have pets in the house?

Please keep children and pets out of the room during the visit and until it has cured. The rest of the house is unaffected.

What a repair cannot fix

We won’t take on work that won’t last, so here’s what a repair cannot put right:

  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)
  • A bath that flexes because its feet or cradle have failed (that needs fixing first)
  • Rust that has eaten right through a steel bath

Send us photos and we will tell you honestly.

What we are called out for in Longbarn

Most bath damage comes from something dropped: bottles, shower heads, tiles and tools. On enamelled baths, a chip that reaches the metal will start to rust.

  • Chips under the taps
  • Chips along the edge of the bath
  • Scuffs and scratches in the surface
  • Chips caused by builders
