Aftercare tips

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Do not scrub with anything abrasive
  • Don’t leave razors or cans standing in the bath
  • Cover the bath during DIY or decorating
  • Give the bath a quick rinse after use

A repaired bath needs no special treatment, beyond gentle cleaning. Skip bleach and gritty creams.

A chip on a metal bath shouldn’t be left. Water gets to the metal and rust starts, and a rust spot is a bigger repair than a clean chip.

Bath repair at your home in Theale

It pays to repair bath damage while it’s small. Exposed metal on enamelled baths soon rusts, and on acrylic, a crack keeps spreading while the bath flexes. Repairing it stops the damage getting worse. Our repair technicians work on cast iron enamel, pressed steel enamel and acrylic, and common reasons people get in touch are an old repair that has yellowed or come loose and chips along the edge of the bath.

A one-year guarantee comes as standard, so you are not left on your own once we’ve gone.

What bath repair costs

Repairs from £95. Every quote is fixed and free. What we take into account:

  • The material
  • Any earlier repairs that need removing first
  • Where the damage is and how we get to it
  • Unusual colours or finishes

It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: the amount of damage, the material, access to the area, and how many jobs we do in one trip. Photos let us give you a fixed figure.

Send pictures for a quote

Almost every job we do is priced from pictures. This is what to send:

  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • Details of any past repairs
  • One picture of the entire bath

Most clients in Theale get their price from photos. Add a line about what happened and your postcode, and we will send back a fixed quote and some dates.

Theale: your questions answered

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

In most cases, yes. A repair skips the removal, fitting and redecorating. We will be honest if it’s not worth it.

Will I be able to see the repair?

We aim for a repair you cannot easily find. The rest of the bath’s condition makes a difference.

Will it make a mess?

No. The work area is masked and covered, and we take our waste away with us.

I’m a tenant. Can you help?

Yes. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.

How soon can you come?

We’ll give you dates with your quote. Tell us if you need it done quickly.

Can rust on a bath be repaired?

Yes. We remove the rust and loose enamel, seal and fill the area, then colour-match the finish.

Can pets and children be at home?

Please keep children and pets out of the room during the visit. The rest of the house is unaffected.

Do you cover Theale?

Yes. We work across the UK and travel to Theale. Send us pictures for a fixed quote, or call 0345 017 0787.

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are thick and very strong, with a fused enamel surface. A chip down to the iron can rust, but the body of the bath lasts a very long time, so it’s always worth repairing.

Pressed steel

Pressed steel is thinner and lighter, with an enamel finish like cast iron. Chips rust quickly on steel, particularly by the plughole, so repair chips early.

Should you replace it?

For damage in one or two places, a repair is the obvious choice. It’s a fraction of the cost of a new bath and fitting, it’s done in one visit, and the bathroom stays exactly as it is. Our bath repair starts from £95. The price reflects the work involved, not your postcode. The full price is agreed before you book.

Why choose Surface Doctor in Theale

  • Straight answers about what a repair can do
  • Rooms protected and left tidy
  • One visit for most repairs
  • One-year guarantee on every repair

See our prices page or resurfacing vs replacement cost guide.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

If you do try a kit, read the instructions carefully, ensure the area is clean and completely dry, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it fails, we can still put it right.

What a professional repair adds is preparation, colour matching and finishing. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, then guarantee it for a year.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time we have agreed, cover the area with dust sheets and masking, and set to work. Expect it to take a morning or an afternoon. We tidy up before we leave and let you know when you can use it again.

  1. We start by looking at the damage and confirming the plan with you.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. We build up the filler in layers, shaping it to the bath.
  4. The colour is tinted by hand until it matches.
  5. The repair is polished to the same gloss as the bath and left to cure.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know which floor the room is on
  • Let the surface dry out before the visit
  • Open a window if you can

When we’d advise against a repair

It helps to know what we can’t do:

  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)
  • Cracks in parts of an acrylic bath we cannot get to from below
  • A steel bath rusted through

Not sure? Send pictures and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

What we work on

  • Pressed steel enamel
  • Roll-top & freestanding
  • Cast iron enamel
  • Whirlpool & spa baths
  • Acrylic
