Materials and what they mean for the repair

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that is the part we put right.

Pressed steel

Steel baths are lighter than cast iron, but have a similar enamel surface. Chips rust quickly on steel, especially around the waste, so repair chips early.

Bath repair in Turnditch, done in place

A repair fixes just the damaged area and blends it into the rest of the bath, which costs far less than replacing a fitted bath and the tiles around it. Most baths can be used again the following day. We work on cast iron enamel, pressed steel enamel and acrylic, and common reasons people get in touch are a chip where the taps sit and rusty patches near the plughole.

You get a one-year guarantee, the same in Turnditch as everywhere else we work.

The process

Expect a friendly, tidy visit. We confirm the time with you beforehand, cover and mask the work area, and get on with the job, which generally takes two to three hours for most chips. If anything looks different from your pictures, we’ll talk to you before going ahead.

  1. First, we check the damage against your photos and agree the plan.
  2. Loose enamel, rust and dirt are removed so the repair can bond.
  3. We build up the filler in layers, shaping it to the bath.
  4. We tint the finish by hand to match the bath.
  5. The repair is polished to the same gloss as the bath and left to cure.

How to prepare

  • Ensure the area is dry
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Let us know if it has been repaired before

DIY kit or professional repair?

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, and the work is guaranteed.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. The trouble is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler frequently lifts.

Prices and what affects them

Repairs from £95. Quotes are free and the price is fixed. What we look at:

  • How many areas need work
  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • What kind of damage it is
  • What the surface is made of

The price depends on how much damage there is and what kind, the material and how many items we do on one visit. You get a fixed quote from your pictures, so you know the cost before you book.

Send pictures for a quote

You can take the pictures on your phone. Just ensure we can see:

  • Something in shot to show the size
  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • One picture of the entire bath
  • Any details about the material

There is no need for us to visit first. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we will come back to you with a fixed figure.

For landlords and businesses

Rented homes see more wear and tear, and replacing things at every changeover adds up. Repairing between tenants keeps the property presentable for less.

We also carry out snagging repairs for builders and developers, putting right damage done during fitting so nothing needs replacing. We hold CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accreditations.

Aftercare tips

Once the work has cured, treat it gently:

  • Protect the bath with a towel when doing jobs nearby
  • Make sure an acrylic bath is firm underfoot
  • Do not scrub with anything abrasive
  • Get any new chip repaired before it rusts

Clean with mild, non-abrasive cleaners and avoid dropping heavy items on the repaired area. Get any new chip seen to quickly, before rust sets in.

Do not leave a chip on a steel or cast iron bath. Once water reaches the metal, rust begins, turning a quick repair into a bigger one.
