Bath repair across PL18: what to expect

Whether your bath is steel, cast iron or acrylic, we can repair it. Each material is repaired a little differently: rust is treated on metal baths, while cracks in acrylic are reinforced from underneath. Typical jobs include a chipped rim or side and chips under the taps, across pressed steel enamel, roll-top & freestanding and cast iron enamel.

You don’t need to empty the room beforehand. Everything we use comes in the van with us, put protection down and get going once we have agreed what we are doing. It generally takes a few hours, depending on the damage, and you are welcome to carry on with your day while we work.

  1. First, the area is cleaned and any loose enamel or rust is removed.
  2. Next we fill the damage and sand it smooth and level.
  3. The colour is mixed on the spot to match your bath.
  4. We apply the finish coats and polish the repair so it blends in.
  5. We leave it to cure; you can usually use the bath the following day.

Cost

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it needs firm support underneath. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that’s the part we put right.

What a repair cannot fix

It helps to know what we can’t do too:

  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)
  • Cracks in parts of an acrylic bath we cannot get to from below
  • A whole bath that’s dull or worn, where a full re-enamel is the better fix

Repair or replace?

Swapping a damaged bath for a new one usually means a plumber, lifting out the old bath, re-tiling and a new panel and getting rid of the old bath. Repairing it deals only with the damage in a single visit.

What your quote should include

  • What happens if they find more damage
  • A fixed price, and whether VAT is included
  • Who will actually do the work
  • Whether the price covers travel

Keeping it looking good

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • Do not scrub with anything abrasive
  • Give the bath a quick rinse after use
  • Store metal items away from the bath
  • Stick to mild cleaners and a soft cloth

Look after the repair the same way as the bath: warm water, washing-up liquid and a soft cloth. Avoid scourers and gritty cream cleaners.

If water is getting through a crack, stop using the bath. Leaks under a bath can damage floors and ceilings.

PL18 questions

Do you do work for letting agents?

Yes, often. We can quote for several properties together and work between tenancies.

Is a cracked acrylic bath repairable?

Most of the time. We reinforce the crack from behind, then fill and refinish the front, so we need access under the bath.

What areas do you cover?

All of Cornwall, and the rest of the UK. Travel is included in the price.

What happens after I send pictures?

You’ll get a fixed quote back, plus dates. You’re under no obligation.

Are you accredited?

Yes. Our accreditations include CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor. See our accreditations page for the full list.

Can you repair a chip on a coloured bath?

Yes, coloured baths are no problem. The colour is tinted by hand on the day.

How long before I can use the bath?

Generally the day after. We will tell you the exact curing time when we finish.
