Can I fix it myself?

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is usually cheaper.

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We remove the old filler and start again, so it does not stop a professional repair. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

Bath re-enamelling in Ford without replacing anything

We re-enamel a lot of period and roll-top baths, which are heavy, hard to move and costly to replace. Doing them in place keeps an original feature. If you have enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough and brown or grey marks that don’t clean off, we can generally put it right.

In and around Ford, homes are a mix of older cottages and newer houses. Older ones may still have cast iron or steel baths, which are well worth keeping, and newer ones generally have acrylic.

You are covered for a year from the day of the repair. If anything is not right, ring us and we’ll come back.

Different materials, different repairs

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Once a chip exposes it, rust follows quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Do you need bath re-enamelling in Ford?

Once enamel loses its gloss, it stains more easily, and cleaning harder only makes it worse. That’s the point where re-enamelling makes sense.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • A dull, rough surface that will not come clean
  • An old resurfacing that is failing
  • A coloured bath you want in white
  • An original cast iron bath that needs restoring

If you let a flat or house near Devonport station (about 0.5 miles west), we repair baths between tenancies so it’s ready to let again quickly.

Our hiring checklist

What bath re-enamelling costs

Resurfacing from £350. Each job gets its own fixed quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • The material
  • How many items we do on one visit
  • How hard the colour is to match
  • Access to the area

Most people are surprised how affordable a repair is, particularly next to the cost of replacement. Photos let us give you the exact figure.

Send pictures for a quote

Most quotes are done from pictures alone. To help us price it:

  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • Any details about the material
  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale

If you are in Ford and want a price, the easiest route is photos: one close up, one from further back, plus your postcode. You will get a fixed quote with dates to choose from.

Your questions about bath re-enamelling in Ford

Can you restore the original baths in an older house in Ford?

Generally, yes. Older baths are often worth repairing rather than replacing. Photos let us tell you what we’d recommend.

I let a flat near Devonport station. Can you help between tenants?

Yes, rental work is a big part of what we do, and a repair between tenants is typically quicker than replacing.

Can you do more than one item on the same visit?

Yes, and it’s often cheaper. Send pictures of everything together and we’ll quote them together.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes: twelve months. If there is a problem with the work in that time, we come back and put it right.

Can you repair something that is been repaired before?

Generally, yes. Tell us what was done before.

Can you fix a peeling bath coating?

Normally, yes. We strip the failing coating and resurface it properly. Mention it when you send pictures.

How soon can you come?

It depends on the time of year and where you are. Send photos with your postcode and we will reply with the earliest dates.

Can I get a quote without a visit?

Nearly always. If pictures do not show enough, we’ll ask for another angle.

How the visit works

We work cleanly and quietly, so you can carry on at home. We protect the area first, then the work takes most of the day. Before we leave, we explain how soon it can be used and how to care for it. Visits around Ford are normally simple: we park, protect the room and get started, after agreeing the plan with you.

  1. The room is masked, protected and ventilated.
  2. Next we degrease the bath and fix chips and rust spots.
  3. We key the surface and put on a bonding primer.
  4. We spray on the new enamel finish in several coats.
  5. Once cured, normally by the next day, the bath is ready.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Open a window if you can
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children
  • Let us know if it has been repaired before

Looking after it afterwards

Simple care helps the repair last. Our advice:

  • Don’t use the bath until it has fully cured
  • Wipe the bath dry after use in hard water areas
  • Get any chip repaired quickly
  • Repair dripping taps early

Avoid hair dye, bath bombs and oils sitting on the surface, because they can mark the finish. Repair dripping taps promptly.

Do not try to scrub a worn bath back to shine. It removes more of the surface.

Honest limits

Some problems need a builder, plumber or fitter rather than us:

  • A bath that’s rusted through
  • A bath split right through the body
  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber

If in doubt, send photos and we will say what we think before booking.
