Bath re-enamelling in Grain without replacing anything

Cast iron and steel baths are ideal for re-enamelling, and acrylic baths can be resurfaced too. You end up with a smooth, glossy surface. We work on pressed steel baths, Victorian roll-tops and cast iron baths, and common reasons people get in touch are enamel that’s lost its shine and feels rough and lots of chips and rust spots.

A one-year guarantee comes as standard, so you’re not left on your own once we’ve gone.

Honest limits

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Damage hidden under a previous coating, until it’s stripped back
  • Steel that has corroded right through
  • Plumbing leaks, which need a plumber

Send us photos and we will tell you honestly.

What we work on

  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Acrylic baths
  • Cast iron baths

How it works

Visits start with a quick look at the job together. Then the area is sheeted and masked and we start. It normally takes the best part of a day, and we’ll keep you posted as we go.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. We remove the old silicone and deep clean the bath.
  3. We repair chips, rust spots and pitting.
  4. We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
  5. Several coats of finish are sprayed on, then it cures.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking restrictions or tricky access
  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift
  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day

DIY kit or professional repair?

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most frequently are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is normally cheaper.

It’s natural to want to try a repair yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs often look fine at first and then fail, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

What bath re-enamelling costs

Resurfacing from £350. A fixed quote means you know the cost before booking. We look at:

  • The colour and finish to match
  • Doing more than one item at once
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear
  • The material

Our prices are the same across the UK, with no extra for Grain. The job itself decides the price: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Send pictures for a quote

Almost every job we do is priced from pictures. This is what we need:

  • One picture of the entire bath
  • Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
  • One sharp close-up of the damage
  • Something in shot to show the size

No survey visit is needed: we price from pictures. Use the quote form, or ring 0345 017 0787 to talk it through.

Signs you need bath re-enamelling in Grain

Many baths we resurface have simply been well used. Underneath, a cast iron or steel bath is typically as strong as ever.

Most people get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • A bath that stays dull however much you clean it
  • A coloured bath you want in white
  • Lots of chips and rust spots
  • Thin, worn enamel in places

Questions to ask before booking

  • How soon you can use it again
  • What protection goes down before work starts
  • How the colour is matched
  • Whether a trained technician does the job

Landlords, letting agents and housing providers in Grain use us as well as householders. Repairing between tenancies keeps void periods short, and it costs much less than replacing.

Grain: your questions answered

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Normally, when the rest is in good condition. Repairing avoids the cost and disruption of replacing. We’ll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Do the materials smell?

Expect a mild smell while we are working.

What information do you need?

Use the quote form or ring 0345 017 0787, and we will take it from there.

Can you repair several things at once?

Yes, and it’s often cheaper. Send pictures of everything together and we’ll quote them together.

How long does re-enamelling take?

Typically a day, then it’s ready to use the following day. Deeply pitted baths may need a second day.

Will there be fumes?

A little, during the work. We set up ventilation and the smell fades as it cures.

Will you leave a mess?

We protect the room with dust sheets and masking first, and we clean up when we’ve finished.

What happens after I send photos?

We look at the pictures and reply with a fixed price and some dates. If anything’s unclear, we will ask for another photo.

Repair or replace: which is better?

Replacing a cast iron bath is a big job: it’s very heavy, may need breaking up, and the replacement can be costly. Resurfacing in place avoids that entirely. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. Instead of hourly rates, we fix the price before we start. Damage, material and access decide it, and combining items on one visit brings it down.

Looking after it afterwards

Nothing complicated is needed, just a few sensible habits:

  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Dry the bath after use to stop limescale
  • Have chips seen to early
  • Leave the bath for the full curing time before using it

Rinse away dyes, oils and bath bombs straight after use, as they can stain. Repair dripping taps promptly.

Avoid scrubbing a dull bath with abrasive cleaners. It just wears the enamel further and makes resurfacing more work.
