How we handle bath re-enamelling in Hallthwaites
We clean, repair and prime the bath before spraying the new finish. Most of the work, and most of the durability, is in the preparation, and we take our time over it. Our repair technicians work on acrylic baths, basins & shower trays and cast iron baths, and people most frequently call us about a coloured bath you want in white and stains that won’t shift.
We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee.

The price depends on how much damage there is and what kind, the material and how many jobs we combine into one visit. We give a fixed quote from your photos, so there are no surprises on the day.

Different materials, different repairs
Cast iron
Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that is what we repair.
Pressed steel
Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.
For landlords and businesses
Housing associations and facilities teams use us for planned and reactive repairs in Cumbria and across the UK. A repair avoids taking out and refitting, which matters when someone is living in the home.
For anyone letting property in or around Hallthwaites, we can repair and quote for several addresses together. Send pictures for each one and we will price them together.
Hallthwaites questions
Is there any odour?
There can be some smell while we work, so we ventilate the room. It clears as the materials cure.
Is it messy?
We protect the room with dust sheets and masking first, and we clean up when we have finished.
What do you need from me?
A close-up, a wider photo and your postcode. After that, we just agree a date.
Do you resurface freestanding baths?
Yes. Inside and out.
Can you quote from photos?
In nearly every case. If pictures do not show enough, we will ask for another angle.
Do you hold any accreditations?
We hold CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, SMAS Worksafe and Builder’s Profile accreditations.
Is there a smell?
There is some smell while the coating is applied, so we ventilate the room. It fades as the coating cures.
Do I need to be at home?
Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time we agree with you.
How we price bath re-enamelling
Prices start from £350. You won’t pay by the hour. The price depends on:
- Whether we combine several jobs
- The material
- How many areas need work
- Whether old repairs or coatings need taking off
Our prices are the same across the UK, so there is no premium for Hallthwaites. What changes the price is the job itself: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.
Getting a price from pictures
We price nearly every job from photos. This is what to send:
- A photo taken from further back
- A close-up of the damage, in focus
- Any details about the material
- Good light, ideally daylight, without flash glare
There’s no need for us to visit first. Photos are enough for us to price nearly every job: we need a close-up, a wider picture and your postcode, and we’ll come back to you with a fixed figure.
What we’re called out for in Hallthwaites
The gloss on enamel is thin, and abrasive cleaning slowly wears it away. Eventually the surface turns porous and stains.
These are the problems we’re asked about most:
- A peeling or bubbling previous coating
- A coloured bath you want in white
- Brown or grey marks that don’t clean off
- A period or roll-top bath worth keeping

Should I try a DIY kit first?
The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, and the work is guaranteed.
A DIY attempt is not a disaster. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it won’t stop us repairing it. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.
Aftercare tips
Good habits make a big difference to how long a repair lasts:
- A quick wipe after use keeps limescale away
- Never use suction bath mats
- Leave the bath for the full curing time before using it
- Use washing-up liquid and a soft cloth
Dry the bath after use if possible, especially in hard water areas, and rinse off any bath products.
The longer worn enamel is left, the rougher it gets, and any rust spreads underneath. Acting earlier keeps the preparation simpler.

The process
Your technician turns up when we said we would and looks over the damage before anything else. The floor and nearby surfaces are covered before any work starts. Most visits take a full day, and the room is left clean and tidy.
- First we look the bath over and confirm the finish.
- Taps, tiles and the floor are masked off.
- The bath is degreased, repaired and keyed.
- We apply the primer and then the finish coats.
- The masking comes off, we tidy up and tell you when it can be used.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear toiletries, mats and anything else from around the area
- Keep children and pets away from the room on the day
- Point us to the nearest place to park
Get a quote
Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: take one close-up and one wider shot of the bath, include your postcode and send them over. You will get a fixed quote, not an estimate.
