Materials and what they mean for the repair

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. The enamel is the part that wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it relies on good support. Repairs to cracks are reinforced from the back.

What we are called out for in Newmarket

Sometimes it’s an earlier resurfacing that has failed, peeling around the waste or bubbling. We strip what’s failing and start again.

People generally call us after spotting something like this:

  • A coating lifting around the plughole
  • Staining under the taps and around the waste
  • A roll-top that’s seen better days
  • Thin, worn enamel in places

What your quote should include

  • What happens if the damage is worse than the pictures show
  • How soon you can use it again
  • Who turns up on the day
  • Whether the price covers travel

Choosing a repair company

How to look after the repair

Aftercare is simple, and it makes a real difference:

  • A quick wipe after use keeps limescale away
  • Fix dripping taps quickly
  • Keep suction mats out of the bath
  • Do not leave bottles, razors or sponges standing on the surface

Treat the new finish gently at first: give it the full curing time, then clean it gently. From then on, avoid abrasives and suction mats.

Leave a peeling coating alone. Water gets under it and the damage spreads, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

Should you replace it?

A new bath means a plumber, lifting out the old bath, re-tiling or making good the walls and several days without a working bathroom. Re-enamelling renews the whole surface with the bath left where it is. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. What it costs depends on how much damage there is and what kind, what it’s made of and how many jobs we combine into one visit. You get a fixed quote from your pictures, so there are no surprises on the day.

Why choose Surface Doctor in Newmarket

  • Everything repaired in place

DIY repairs versus a professional job

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but many of the jobs we do start with putting right a DIY repair. Getting it right first time is generally cheaper.

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that is fine. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it doesn’t stop a professional repair. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send photos.

How we price bath re-enamelling

Prices start from £350. You will know the full cost before you book. We take into account:

  • The material
  • The size and number of damaged areas
  • What kind of damage it is
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out

The price reflects the work involved, not where you live. You will see the full price before booking.

Getting a price from photos

You can typically get a fixed quote without us visiting. To help us price it:

  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • Whether it’s been repaired or coated before
  • Daylight if possible, and no flash reflection
  • A picture taken from further back

For most jobs, photos are all we need to give you a price. Tell us what happened and where you are, and we’ll send back a fixed quote and some dates.

Newmarket questions

Will the price change on the day?

It’s rare, but if it happens we talk to you first. You decide whether to go ahead.

What does bath re-enamelling cost?

Resurfacing from £350. Every job gets a fixed quote from your photos. Send a close-up and a picture of the whole item with your CB8 postcode.

How long will the bath be out of use?

One day for most baths and can be used the day after. We’ll confirm timings when we quote.

Does re-enamelling smell?

Yes, while we’re applying the finish. Ventilation keeps it down, and it fades as the finish cures.

Do you resurface freestanding baths?

Yes, roll-tops are a big part of our work. We resurface the inside, and the outside can be refinished too.

When can you do it?

It depends on the time of year and where you are. Send pictures with your postcode and we’ll reply with the earliest dates.

What happens next?

We come back with a fixed quote. There is no obligation to book.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes: twelve months. If there’s a problem with the work in that time, we come back and put it right.

When we’d advise against a repair

Honesty matters more than a booking, so here’s what a repair can’t fix:

  • Steel that has corroded right through
  • A poorly supported acrylic bath, until it’s firmed up
  • A bath split right through the body

Not sure? Send photos and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What we work on

  • Cast iron baths
  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Acrylic baths
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Basins & shower trays

What we do, step by step

We begin by going over the job with you, so you know exactly what we’re doing. Next, we cover and mask everything nearby and the work begins. It normally takes the best part of a day, and we’ll tell you if anything changes.

  1. We check the bath and agree the finish with you.
  2. Taps, tiles and the floor are masked off.
  3. The bath is degreased, repaired and keyed.
  4. We apply the primer and then the finish coats.
  5. We remove the masking, tidy up and give you the curing time.

How to prepare

  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area
  • Let us know if it has been repaired before
  • Let the surface dry out before the visit

Getting a price

Getting a quote takes a couple of minutes: take one close-up and one wider shot of the bath, add your postcode and send them to us. You will get a fixed price, not an estimate.
