About our bath re-enamelling in Smeaton

We resurface cast iron, steel and acrylic baths, including roll-tops and period baths. The finish is sprayed on in several coats over a bonding primer, once the bath has been cleaned, repaired and prepared. We’re frequently asked to fix a bath that stays dull however much you clean it and a roll-top that’s seen better days, across cast iron baths, basins & shower trays and acrylic baths.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. Just call us if there’s a problem and we will come back.

When we’d advise against a repair

Not everything can be repaired, and we would rather say so up front. Repairs won’t solve:

  • A poorly supported acrylic bath, until it’s firmed up
  • Leaks from fittings rather than the bath
  • Damage hidden under a previous coating, until it’s stripped back

Send us pictures and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Surfaces we repair

  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Acrylic baths
  • Cast iron baths
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Basins & shower trays

What happens on the day

A typical visit goes like this: we arrive at the agreed slot, protect everything around the work area, carry out the work and tidy away. Allow a full day from start to finish. Before we go, we’ll explain how long to leave it and how to look after it.

  1. We check the bath and agree the finish with you.
  2. Everything around the bath is masked and covered.
  3. The bath is degreased, repaired and keyed.
  4. We apply the primer and then the finish coats.
  5. The masking comes off, we tidy up and tell you when it can be used.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions or tricky access
  • Avoid using the area for a few hours before we arrive
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children

What your bath is made of matters

Cast iron

Re-enamelling suits cast iron baths perfectly. They’re built to last, and only the surface wears, so a new finish makes them look new again.

Pressed steel

Steel baths re-enamel well, as long as any rust is dealt with first. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we check it carefully.

Repair or replace: which is better?

Replacing a bath can take several days across several trades. Resurfacing takes one technician and normally a day, and the bath is usable the day after. Prices start from £350. A few things move the price: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Photos let us give you a fixed figure.

Questions from Smeaton

Is repairing better than replacing?

Typically, when the rest is in good condition. A repair avoids removal and making good. We’ll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Do you hold any accreditations?

Yes, including CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor. See our accreditations page for the full list.

Will there be fumes?

Some odour is normal while we spray, so we ventilate the room. It clears as the finish cures.

Will the price change on the day?

The price is fixed for what the photos show. Anything extra is discussed before we begin.

Are there extra charges for Smeaton?

There is no separate call-out charge. The fixed price covers the visit and the work.

Do you cover Smeaton?

Yes, we do. Technicians travel to Smeaton from across the region, with no extra charge for travel.

How long is the bath unusable?

Normally one day, with the bath ready the next day. Deeply pitted baths may need a second day.

Can you make a coloured bath white?

Yes. We can resurface a coloured bath in white, and we can do the rest of the suite as well.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

If you’re set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, and do not use it until it has fully cured. If it fails, we can still put it right.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For damage in plain view, cracks, holes or rust, or coloured finishes, it’s worth having it done properly.

Keeping it looking good

Once the work has cured, treat it gently:

  • A quick wipe after use keeps limescale away
  • Never use suction bath mats
  • Respect the curing time we give you
  • Have chips seen to early

A quick rinse and wipe after use helps, particularly where water is hard, so limescale can’t build up.

If a previous coating is starting to peel, do not pick at it. Moisture gets underneath and makes it worse, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

What bath re-enamelling costs

Resurfacing from £350. There is no charge for travel to Smeaton. The price comes down to:

  • What kind of damage it is
  • Unusual colours or finishes
  • Doing more than one item at once
  • The size and number of damaged areas

We charge the same wherever you are, so there’s no premium for Smeaton. The job itself decides the price: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Getting a price from photos

Phone photos are fine. Ensure they show:

  • A close-up of the damage, in focus
  • Any details about the material
  • Your postcode, so we can check dates
  • Details of any past repairs

Getting a price is easy: snap the damage close up and then the whole item, send them to us with your postcode, and you’ll get a fixed quote back. Quotes are free and you’re under no obligation.
