Before and after: an old shower tray refinished by Surface Doctor

How we price shower tray repair

Prices start from £95. We don’t charge extra for travel to Ormsgill. The price depends on:

  • How easy the damage is to reach
  • Doing more than one item at once
  • What the surface is made of
  • The size and number of damaged areas

Every job is a little different, so each one is priced on its own. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Send photos for a quote

You can normally get a fixed price without us visiting. To make it quick:

  • Where you are, by postcode
  • The material, if you know it
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings

A quote takes minutes to ask for: take one close-up and one wider shot of the shower tray, include your postcode and send them to us. You’ll get a fixed quote, not an estimate.

What your shower tray is made of matters

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it relies on good support. Repairs to cracks are reinforced from the back.

Ceramic

Ceramic trays are hard and glossy. Impacts can chip or crack them, and we match the gloss when we repair them.

When a repair is not the answer

Some problems need a builder, plumber or fitter rather than us:

  • Leaks from the waste or pipework (a plumber’s job)
  • Trays cracked in several places
  • Damage below the tray that needs a builder

Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly.

What we work on

  • Cast iron
  • Acrylic
  • Enamelled steel
  • Stone resin
  • Ceramic

Work for landlords and builders

Hotels, guest houses and holiday lets can’t afford rooms out of action for long, so most of our work is done in a single visit. We can work around your bookings.

We carry out planned and one-off repairs for housing associations and facilities teams in Cumbria and across the UK. A repair avoids taking out and refitting, which is easier on the people living there.

Repair or replace: which is better?

The tray itself may not cost much, but the work around it does: removing the screen, breaking out tiles, relaying the base and re-tiling. A repair is one visit. Repairs from £95, with every job priced individually. Most people are surprised how affordable a repair is, especially compared with replacing and refitting. Send pictures and we will give you the exact figure.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

You can buy a DIY kit for most repairs, and they can make a small mark look better. The trouble is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler frequently lifts.

A kit can be fine for a tiny mark out of sight. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, a professional repair is worth it.

Looking after it afterwards

Good habits make a big difference to how long a repair lasts:

  • Do not ignore a tray that flexes
  • Use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner
  • Rinse away soap after showering
  • Keep harsh chemicals off the tray

Store heavy bottles on a shelf, not on the tray, to avoid chips.

Do not keep using a cracked tray. Water can get through to the floor and walls, where it causes damage you cannot see.

Normally the following day. We will confirm before we leave.

Does someone need to be in?

Yes. We need access to the room while we work, at a time that suits you.

Will there be a smell?

There can be some smell while we work. It fades as everything cures.

How quickly can you book me in?

We will give you dates with your quote. Tell us if you need it done quickly.

What we do, step by step

The work is clean and fairly quiet, so you can stay at home while we are there. Protection goes down first, then the work takes a few hours, or most of a day for a full resurface. At the end we talk you through how soon it can be used and how to care for it.

  1. We check the tray is firmly supported and find the cause of any crack.
  2. We clean and prepare the damaged area or the entire tray.
  3. We fill and strengthen any chips or cracks and sand them smooth.
  4. We colour-match the repair, or spray a new finish across the whole tray.
  5. We leave it to cure; the shower is usually usable the next day.

Before we arrive

  • Keep children and pets away from the room on the day
  • Tell us if there are stairs or a lift
  • Clear the area around the damage
